What a joke! H1-Bs are NOT "the best and the brightest from around the world"! At best, they are mediocre. At worst, they are downright incompetent. There is a lot of fraud and corruption in this visa program.
There is a separate visa program for the "best and the brightest from around the world"---it's the O visa.
We need to send all the H1-Bs packing.
That's too extreme. Many H-1B's hold bachelors and advanced degrees from US institutions including the very top ones. They're far from being mediocre. The mediocre and incompetent ones are typically those that were educated abroad and shipped over to work for just a few years.
The data doesn't show that h1b workers are somehow paid less. There are indeed H1B workers that are paid less but that isn't the norm that has been cracked up to be. There are plenty of H1B workers in high-tech, higher education, scientific research, and even the government that are paid very well if not more than their American counterparts.
It is popular for people to suspect that when someone else Outcompetes them, it must be that that person is cheaper never about merit. But that's just a bad rationizing. The truth is that when you have the best and the brightest from around the world, there are not necessarily going to be just Americans. It's going to be some Americans but always going to be more international that some people here would like to tolerate
Have you ever read about how American employees who were being made redundant spend their last months at work training their H1-B replacement?? One would think that if those on an H1-B are the "best and the brightest" why would they need months of on the training.

O-visas are short-term, NON-immigrant visas.
Of the 85,000 visas allotted, just how many of them do you think had a US/UK hold bachelors and advanced degrees??
The majority of those who are given H1B visas are from India because there is this belief that they are "the best" when it comes to IT, which is not true. Most Indians have several bogus resumes designed to fit the industry/job that they apply to. It's unlikely that companies perform intense verification of the details noted on a resume.
Quote:
Infosys, an Indian consulting and outsourcing company with a location in Plano, Texas, announced a $34 million civil settlement with the Justice Department on Wednesday. Of all companies in the U.S., Infosys received the fourth most H1-B visas between 2010 and 2012 -- a total of 6,550.

While I am no fan of H1-B's this sort of work does require training no matter how bright folks are. They need to be taught the environment, all the specialized software-some of which may have been written in house, etc etc. At my work we hire the brightest folks possible.....and STILL have a 6 month training period.
Washington politicians (Republican and Democrat) are on the side of big business and increasing the number of Indian tech workers.
Are any 2016 contenders calling to reduce H1B visas?
"The first bill, introduced Tuesday by Sens. Orrin Hatch (R., Utah), Amy Klobuchar (D., Minn.) and four others, would increase the number of high-skilled visas available each year to as many as 195,000 from the current cap of 65,000 and otherwise allow for more legal immigration to the U.S. "
"The measure is similar to the high-tech provisions in a sweeping 2013 Senate immigration bill, which died in the House. It is being cosponsored by Sens. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), Chris Coons (D., Del.), Jeff Flake (R., Ariz.) and Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.)."

And publicly calling for an investigation makes them look like they care about America while in the halls of Congress they are increasing the visas.
Why are they only insisting on looking at layoffs due to legal workers in this country? Is there any reason that we are not doing the same with criminal immigration, and even more so, the importation of unskilled immigrants with "refugee" status?
I didn't know that. Well...leave to the CA dems to find someone just as bad as her, I'm sure
Well, I'll be voting for Kamala Harris. She has a lot of potential...
