Of course; that is the purpose of zoning. A city has to make sure it doesn't kill the goose that provides most of the funding to them. Most housing hardly pays for the services they get in taxes paid locally.Industry and high tax areas subsidizes.
Somebody has to work the service industry jobs in this town. People aren't going to drive from 50 miles away just to pore rich people their coffee
They don't have to drive 50 miles. Just over the tracks and down the hill a little should be enough distance to keep the thieves robbers and rapers from trashing up the good taxpaying people of this town.

A bit of hyperbole there, but yeah, cheaper areas to live are a very short and easy commute away (look up Darien on a map). Additionally, there are resources of bored housewives (who often own and work some of the non-chain retail), teenagers, and not-yet-launched fresh grads in towns like this who generally do a far better job than the usual staff in low wage service industry positions. Further, wages and prices tend to be a bit higher. All in all it works out and service industry staffing in practice isn't a problem in towns like this. In fact, the quality of service industry staffing tends to be heads and shoulders above what you'll find elsewhere, especially outside of school hours.

Reason: grammar
The U.S. is millions of square miles in size. Being free, we have the ability to move anywhere we want to. So, who gives a chit what a group of 1%'s do in or on the 100 square miles they live on? quit worrying and bitching about what others have that you don't and focus on yourself and enjoying the short time your given on this planet.
Think of it this way, why in the world would you want to live in "affordable housing" in an area that is full of people you would never be associated with other than to prove some stupid point that your some "equal". They are most likely not the same personalities, definitely not the same social or economic class and lord knows have a lot more money. While your running to block buster for weekend entertainment they are taking the family yacht for a weekend spin.
Same stupid thinking just another day. Quit trying to force people to live like you think they should live. It's like a bad case of Penis Envy.
Ahhh and welcome to the free market. So what has to happen? Wages must go up to provide incentive for people to drive fifty miles.
But what happens when you let tens of millions of uneducated, unskilled workers into the country? It drives these wages lower, bc when twenty illegals are willing to drive 50 miles just to make $8/hr, why would they pay Mikey America $15/hr?

This story shows that Darien, Ct is a place full of people who are very wealthy, pretentious, have a false sense of superiority, and are far more ignorant than the black people they want so desperately to exclude from among their ranks. What a shameful, backwards area of the country.

Someone has to pore these rich people their coffee. Someone has to cook these rich people their meals. Someone has to clean these rich people's houses. Someone has to nanny these rich people's kids. If you make it too expensive to live nearby then there will be noone able to to take care of the entitled elitists.
Building affordable housing complexes in nice suburbs raises taxes, raises crime, and lowers property value. If you make an effort to do that you are basically making yourself an enemy of everyone in town who knows what you are doing, so if you want to participate in town life and activities you shouldn't try to sabotage the community you want to be an accepted part of.
Frankly he should be grateful that no one has decided to take more aggressive action than socially excluding his family.
Depends on who moves into it. There are plenty of low-income people who don't do crime. Childless adults don't generate education expenses and don't produce gangbangers-in-training.

Since when is a one-acre minimum lot size consonant with the free market?

Thank you for proving my point perfectly and to your post. No, nobody HAS to do anything for them.
