In the United States, we have dealt with the consequences of racism and discrimination for so long, will there ever be an end?

Short of making contact with an alien civilization and realizing that we should function together as a species and not individual races/creeds/colors, I really don't think so. Even if we had first contact tomorrow, it would take generations to bring people together as humans.

Humans have only been on the planet some 250,000 years or so and racism as we know it has only been around for (being generous) four to five hundred years. I suspect that in relatively short time we will put racism behind us... if we don't become extinct first.

Not likely.
Why just "In the United States?"
It's the human condition; we have no corner on the market.

Racism is everywhere: India, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas... And it's not just a black/white thing.
No it won't end.

I said the United States because I have not lived anywhere else. But I definitely have heard of racism that occurs elsewhere as well.

Ending affirmative action and other race-based divisive programs would be a start.

I think that it's important to speak up against racism every single time. That is the only way it's going to reach its end. But since people don't seem to speak up every single time, chances are racism is here to stay. We've kind of proven ourselves unable to compassionately interact with one another so far. I suppose all we can do is the best we can do and hope it makes a difference in the long run?

Maybe the next generation will have better success. It makes me nervous, however, when I see so many kids who are lacking education. Without education, we have too many people vying for the same low paying jobs, which results in a poor living situation. That seems to breed contempt and violence. Whenever I see someone saying, "Why does it matter that I don't know how to spell or write a resume?" it makes me want to cry. It IS important... for more reasons than simply knowing how to do those things for your own self esteem.

As long as humans still exist? No.

Not in our lifetimes, but I have hope that if mankind can last that long, maybe in about 100-200 more years most racism and other kinds of bigotry will be almost entirely eliminated.

Unfortunately, as long as there are racists and racists have grandchildren, racism will persist to at least some degree. The only reason I think it CAN end is that as more and more people are exposed to more and more people of other races who are just as intelligent, educated, successful, kind, moral, etc., etc., etc. as they are, the effects of racist "preaching" will be countered with evidence to the contrary.

I still remember meeting a man when I was a child -- this was 50 or so years ago -- who was absolutely convinced that "blacks" were a COMPLETELY different species more ape and human, and not nearly as "moral" as Caucasians. It only took a little bit of thinking and observation on my part to know this was not true, but still, when one is exposed to such thinking, at least a tiny bit of racism becomes part of one's make-up.
