Now that Nepal had the big one, are Californians a little more concerned than they were a week ago?

Why California?

For the real big ones we should look to New Madrid in Missouri or perhaps Yellowstone which would be a real blast.

Us Californians are always ready for the "Big One". At the same time we are indifferent to the potential threat. Living in a state of fear is no way to truly live.

When there is a big earthquake somewhere else, it can remove some of the pressure on the faults under California, so Cali may have a quieter time of it than normal. But at the same time, a remote earthquake could increase the pressure as well, too. But seismologists are getting better at their predictions, so who knows?

The ring of fire extends all the way up from Chilé to Alaska, and it's just as likely a volcano may blow in the Cascades, or in Mexico, Nicaragua, Columbia, Peru, or unsettle a mid-west fault in the U.S. No one knows for sure. There were 2 minor quakes in N. Idaho the day after the Chilean quake, and that's a zone that rarely shakes.

I've been to Nepal twice and I would like to make these observations: Nepal is an extremely poor third world country. So poor in fact they regard their huge neighbor to the south, India, as a "rich" country. The average Nepali makes 1/2 the income of the average Indian. Nepal is a country that is slightly smaller than Florida, but with about 25% more people.

This earthquake did not have to be as destructive as it was but for two facts: #1 - the epicenter was so close to the capital city and most populous city: Kathmandu; and #2 there appears to be no building codes in that city. I was always appalled at how flimsy and poorly constructed the buildings were over there. Even multi-story buildings are so cheaply made.

Why are people from Nepal looking more Southeast Asian or East Asian than its immediate neighbors, the South Asians (Indians, and Bangladesh)?

Dems and leftists. Compared to them, earthquakes are tame.

Republicans are scary too.

Democracy exists to inhibit change.
