There is a "Secular Student Alliance" at a local college. What are they trying to prove? That they can have a club too since the Christians have one?

Here is their "mission" and goals.

Quote:
We are a proud affiliate of the Secular Student Alliance and the Center for Inquiry.

To learn more about the SSA, check out their main website at www.secularstudents.org

To learn more about the CFI, check out their main website at Home | Center for Inquiry

Our goals are to:

- Establish a home for atheists, agnostics, and other freethinkers at ______ College.

- Challenge beliefs in gods, psychics, and all other supernatural occurrences with arguments based on scientific evidence, logic, and reason.

- Continuously educate ourselves with regard to new scientific discoveries as well as established fields.

- Continuously educate ourselves with regard to the beliefs of others so that we may truly understand their arguments and speak from a position of knowledge.

- Present a positive view of atheism to the community.

- Establish relationships with other related organizations around the world to share ideas.

- Offer debates, educational workshops, guest speakers, movie showings, a book club, open discussion, and social gatherings for _____ College students and the surrounding community.

- Keep an open mind!
Atheists always brag about how they are never harming anybody and they "let Christians be" but this isn't proving it. They even had a day called "Blasphemy Day" where they wrote bible verses on the sidewalk in chalk that sparks controversy, all from the Old Testament(such as killing someone in a different religion, etc). Predictably, they only seem to focus on Christians, and not Muslims or Jews.

Why should I care? If they want to have a dryer lint alliance, so what? There doesn't have to be an understandable point to everything by all.

No more so than a Christian alliance, a Muslim alliance or a Jewish alliance. Though I'm surprised. Most rational people don't need to be part of some little group to reinforce their beliefs and protect them from things that ask them to question their faith. When you're rational there is no need for a cult.

Sounds good to me. I'd probably join something like that if I lived in a very religious part of the country. Thankfully, I don't.

Secularism will continue to rise in the modern world (including the US), as long as technology and well-being continue to improve. A belief in God (and religion in general) relies on ignorance to survive.

"Uh-oh, something I don't agree with. Must be pointless then."

Anyone can have a group for whatever they want. You don't like it, don't join it. Simple. If you want to view it as a 'they have a group so we want one' fine, but bare in mind, the Jews had a religion first then the Christians decided they needed one.

There are plenty of things I don't agree with, but I don't have a problem with them meeting as a club. I'm not Muslim and never will be, but would have nothing against a "Muslim Club."

Maybe they just want to hang out with like-minded individuals.

Excuse me, I'm confused.

You had enough of a "problem" with the secular alliance club to complain about it.

I wouldn't be too impressed by, for instance, a campus Betty Crocker club or a NASCAR club, but I can't imagine why on earth I would try to start an internet discussion about either one - or any other kind of club. As long as it meets the campus rules, I'm good with it.
