UMMMM My dad and his family is from Germany and I speak German. I dont see anything wrong with it that people would need to be "saved" from it.
People need to see past Hitler, and realize most Germans are like him.

"We DESERVED what we have gotten so far."

They truly believe that the majority of Americans have NO "backbone" anymore at diplomacy and that we are "ALL self-absorbed, greedy, materialistic, possessive, lazy, fat, little piggies who deserve to fall into Third World Status."

Their sentiments were echoed throughout the cafe' and they fear for America's demise and believe we have only become successful at isolating ourselves from the world and created far more enemies than friends within the short timespan of just 8 years.

Are these unfounded claims, or just the opinions of the minority outside of America?
Any insight to this would be nice, or should I care?
Considering the source "Vancouver", Canada in general, what do you expect. I do business with several Canadian companys, when I get that kind of garbage from any of them, I just tell them "Yeah , but then your from Vancouver the cess pool full of dope smokin socialist, why should I possibly care what you think about my country. Usually ends the conversation.

That would probably pretty well end the discussion for me, too.

Default Great replies........

Very impressive replies to this thread......for the most part, that is!

Yeah, there's no question about the attitutes and generalized ideologies of the people of Vancouver, BC!
It IS an extremely liberal, socialistic city for sure and they really do smoke a lot of dope and focus on their hockey games.....religiously. There is also no question to, that Vancouver BC.......is NOT representative of much of the rest of Canada, like Toronto or Montreal. They are ALL very proud of their "strong" Loonie at the moment.....and their love affair with Hong Kong, but their attitude while they are HERE in the STATES for a day of shopping......IS atrocious and they are RUDE and horrible drivers too, more often than not!

As far as European views of America and our gun ownership.......yes, Hollywood and the media here definitely portray America as far more violent than it actually is! FAR MORE!

MANY Christians and people from ALL backgrounds might OWN a firearm (rifle, handgun or ?).......but MOST do not likely carry these guns much and likely would leave them home unless they are going to a shooting range, hunting or camping!
There ARE plenty of beasts (cougars, bears, etc.) in the wildernest areas of America......where one IS DEFINITELY......going to "feel" safer while camping or hiking......WITH a GUN.....but the actual ODDS of EVER NEEDING a gun to fight off some human threat (intruder, or ??)....IS NOT very great and MOST of America IS VERY safe.....except many urban ghetto neighborhoods.....OR unless.....IF YOU....YOURSELF are involved with a criminal element, i.e. (drug dealers, thieves, etc.)....then YES.....you would more likely stand a chance at becomming a victim by someone with a gun.

Unfortunately though......TOO MANY horrible incidents in the last decade where some teenager or mentally ill, psychotic and ANGRY individuals......HAVE accessed guns with little or no effort.....and HAVE gone on rampages and killing sprees that reflect on our society, or its problems that are not addressed in a beneficial and preventative manner very well. Those are heartbreaking stories for sure but further laws and gun control efforts will NOT stop a single person from snapping and going on a killing spree......IF they ARE determined to do so!
SAD......but VERY true.

Thanks for some great replies.

Like Reagan I trust, but verify.
I just wanted to understand why an American Christian would believe that a Christian could own a gun when Jesus told them to turn the other cheek, especially when the majority of the European Christians do not own nor want a gun.

Not all Christians in America carry or own a firearm. Fact is, IMO, it would be a very small percentage. You are trying to, once again, generalize an issue to meet your agenda.
So you believe that the criminals who pack heat cannot be Christian or do you simply view criminals who believe in God as not Christian?

Vancouver a cesspool? LOL! That's hardly a word that I would use to describe it. It's much safer than any U.S city of it's size. I think cesspool is more appropriate for describing some of the many crime infested ghetto's in the U.S. And if you think Vancouver is "socialist" then you're playing fast and loose with the term. Anything that isn't hard core right wing is socialist to a lot of Americans.

Let me answer you this way: Say a criminal came into your home and was going to hurt, or kill, your family.

Say you had the means to stop the criminal - but, it might result in the criminals death.

Question: Would you, as Christian, take the necessary actions to protect your family even it it meant the death of the criminal?

After they finished describing the US, did they bother to add all that Canada has done for the world?

How is it the only people that are cursed for their consumerism are Americans?

You mean there is no consumerism and materialism in Europe, China, Russia and eslewhere? Please.

Or do those countries have just "the right amount" or the just "the right type" of consumerism.

Probably not too much crass consumerism in most of Africa but who wants to live there?

Have McDonalds and Euro Disney gone out of business yet due to the sophisticated non-materialistic tastes of the Euros? Are US entertainment venues not making it on the continent (or in Canada)?

Sorry, no hand wringing here.
