They also don't want to give up their social programs... they rather get over the recession and keep their social programs even if it leads to a decline in our economy... now who is selfish?
Let the people KEEP their money and watch the economy soar? I have been reading that they are hoping for an economy boost with these rebates.
It basically seems that this whole tax rebate is proving what Ron Paul has been trying to tell the American people.
If we paid no taxes at all, it would be heaven on earth!
Seriously, I want good roads, planned cities, fire and police protection, public schools, state universities, social security, etc. There are no free lunches!
I picture the perfect Libertarian world to look like rural Mexico. Jacked up roads, falling down houses, poor people everywhere, a few who take advantage of the masses in armed compounds, dirty water, poison food... That's what you get when no one pays taxes.

I think the problem on here is that many people think in black and white, with no shades of gray.
Most independents that I know with lobertarian views have no problem with federal programs for defense and interstate commerce. They have no problem with locally funded programs for schools, roads, police, and fire departments.
It's just that federal spending is way more unchecked than local or state spending. Our small town residents nitpick every last detail of our school dress code and which classes are being offered... yet it's nearly impossible to influence change with a program like no child left behind, since it was implemented a federal level.
Oh, and to say that the taxes in Mexico are non-existant would be false... they are required to pay taxes, it's just that they don't have an enforcement arm of their tax department as we do.
Income tax is only a very small portion of the revenue collected by the Federal government. It's also helpful to slash federal spending. We could do a lot with the money used to support our bases in 130 countries. Think trillions.

Well stated! When I see people like Ron Paul saying the IRS should be eliminated I am ecstatic, but I am not an idiot... I know local governments will have to continue to tax to keep supporting our schools, maintaining and expanding our infrastructure, and providing services which obviously need to continue.
