I've always suspect that it's more a matter of the segment of the population that police are drawn from rather than a philosophy built in their work life.

Every police officer that I've ever known had personal firearms at home and families that know how to use them.
Did you ever wonder how many of those were "confiscated" from citizens? A friend of one of my tenants regularly receives firearms from a relative in another state that is a cop. The firearms are stolen from citizens! Disgusting. I'm sure this goes on much more than we know of! It's what cops do!
