By the early 60's, black families had a much higher level of stability than whites.

My contention is that "the great society" program signed by lbj started this cycle by taking responsibility away from parents.

Our forefathers created a system that would all but guarantee government gridlock. They understood that the more a government does to try to "help", the more harm they generally cause. Inevitably, the elected idiots found ways to erode the barriers to this gridlock. The results are plain to see today in many forms.

That is BS. In 1965 55% of black people were living in poverty-- now it is 20%-25%. If things felt more stable it is because this was before mass incarceration and the criminalization of everything. If by stable you mean fewer two parent households that has more to do with the sexual revolution and the de-stigmatization of having children outside of marriage. People are also less religious, so the pressure to get married before children is less of an issue. Keep in mind that only 28% of poor people are getting financial assistance. Before the welfare reform of 1996, the number was 75%. Plus there are work requirements and training requirements, that it is silly to think that any welfare programs encourage a lack of work or parenthood.

I seem to recall reading that Gov't investigators found people living in Depression era conditions in the early 1960s which led to the Great Society legislation. One would think the boom employment years of WW2 and immediate postwar would have improved everyone's life.

I have a new theory on the modern increase in single parent households, not to explain all of the situation but at least part of it.

If you don't own property of any kind, and it's obvious how poor in terms of assets blacks can be at all levels, there's less and less point in ensuring that kids are yours. You end up with the more laissez-faire approach to mating and fatherhood that you might find in a hunter-gatherer society and less the form you'd find in people that are tied to the land via farms or other wealth.

Yes, 7 out of 10 black children are born out of wedlock. Thank you, liberals.

So we should be encouraging marriage or having less children? I always forget where right wingers stand on this one.

Capitalism that was allowed to run rough shod is what started it. Make companies start paying better wages it ends.
