I honestly liked the Obama community college proposal. That saves students about 20k a year or so for gen eds and ground level courses as well as removes the less serious students. Hell, it might remove the need for the 092 remedial courses the colleges offer.
In many European and other 1st world countries, college education is free just like K - 12. Students may need to pay for their own housing and textbooks though. In America, college cost is among the most expensive in the world, and the cost keep raising every year it seems like. Our students and young people today are struggling with huge loan debts when there is no guarantee of finding any jobs in this economy, and many even low-paying jobs; indeed, students who find jobs right after college still must pay their huge debts, or their parents' which isn't easy. Yes, community college is more affordable, and there are "scholarships" and "financial aid" out there, but still not enough and you could talk of tens of thousands of student loans after graduating despite all of this "free" money. Going to college is very expensive, and shouldn't be! Now those who chose to attend private college is different, and graduate school should be charged. Yes, I understand college isn't for everyone and surprisingly despite college being free of charge in many other nations, not all students decide to attend college or pick "crappy" majors.
I believe undergraduate degree should be free of charge for all students just like K - 12 in public schools. However, students must do good in high school to qualify. Public colleges should not be for profit!

One reason college tuition is so high in this country is because of "government insured student loans," which leaves colleges and universities free to raise their tuition as much as they want, and pay huge salaries (and tenor) to professors, many of whom seldom teach a class, limit the number of students, etc.
When the government subsidies something, it's cost goes up.

Baloney. Swedish students only pay for textbooks and housing cost. They don't need to move out from their own home to attend college unless they live in rural areas.

They give grants at community colleges and most who get their BS/BA degrees get them for practically nothing. FASA,( Pell Grants) fund anyone who's parents make $50,000 or less a year. Since the majority of Americans make around $42,0000 a year the majority of people do get a free college education.
Even if you make over, they still pay for some. If you want an education it can be had. Community colleges are great to take advantage of and you get a good education for practically nothing. They also offer work on campus programs to help.
Both of my kids are going to community college even though they could go on to a university because they can get their degrees for nothing. It's a great savings to take advantage of. If you want the prestige of a university you can always just attend it for your last year and get your degree from there. But community college teaches the same thing, and you save your money.
I think the biggest problem is our drop out rate, even though it's free. Just my opinion.
Bernie won't get any cooperation from the GOP on this one. They need to ensure that the coming generations will continue to lack the capacity for critical thought and be just as easy to manipulate.
The main beneficiary of student loans are the banks. The college administrations are next in line. College text publishers are not far behind. The students are only needed to keep the gravy train on track.
As college degrees are the entry to any decent paying jobs the initial four years should be as low cost as possible and subsidy should include tuition, lab fees, housing, dorm food, and books and other materials. The cost could be paid for by a permanent 5% addition to the individual's income tax. That way the student that does not study for a high paying job (a biologist that counts bee populations for instance) would pay relatively little compared to the Business School graduate that makes fortune in the market. The latter gets more money from the education so they should pay more for it.
The bankers etc. are the real losers under my system. That is a good thing.
