"While Swedish students end up with relatively high levels of debt, the monthly costs of carrying that debt are pretty cheap. (It's about 3.8% of estimated average monthly income of new graduates, according to one study.) Interest rates are low. They're set by the government and maintained through subsidies. And the length of repayment is long: 25 years or until the student turns 60. In other words, the Swedish system of student debt is financially manageable and sets students up to begin their lives as viable adults separate from their parents."

I think we should expect the same of our government in regards to favorable interest rates and payment periods. But, anyone who claims college is "free" is blowing sunshine where the sun don't shine.
This is a thread about Swedish vs American students I see and not about affordable college options.
Anybody can get a relatively low cost but good education in the U.S. As usual they just don't want it. They want the big campus parties. No, Harvard won't be free anytime soon.
This is a misleading thread, you CAN get the same here. If you want a fancy school to keep up with the "Joneses" anywhere it won't be free. But, you can get a low cost but good education if you want it.

Correct. I have a family member who got a masters degree with no debt and no help from her parents. She worked her way through.
Millions of people get through college by working hard and minimizing their party time. That's what happens when it's your OWN money rather than Other People's Money.
Is the GOP against free education through the 12th grade? If someone doesn't develop a capacity for critical thought after 12 years of free education what makes you think another 4 years of free education will make much difference.
If they could gain enough support to charge people for k-12 they would...maybe getting kids back in the canneries at 10 cents an hour ya know.....

And there's the key: she worked her way through college.
If I hear about one more adult full-time student who should, in fact, be working full-time while going to college part-time, I'm going to hurl.
Colleges are not selling 'education' - they're selling CREDENTIALS.
You can learn any way, any time, any place, but without those credentials, that education won't comply with Labor laws, etc., etc.
If you want to drive down the cost for credentials, let government offer credentials - by - examination.
That would kill off the monopoly that accredited institutions rely on.
When will "Progressives" (socialists) learn that nothing is free?
