You do know that Ivy League used skin color as a factor and if you are of certain color, you can get accepted even you have significantly less scores, right?
Ivy League schools do not give any scholarships - it's all need based financial aid. So his family obviously has resources that meant that he would get less financial aid from an Ivy than he would get from a school that was providing merit based scholarship money that wasn't based on financial need.

they dont give athletic scholarships, they do give scholarships in other fields.
He has a 4.58 GPA and 34 out of 36 on ACT yet you think hes unqualified. Figures
ACT score is impressive, but the GPA is low, considering the sheer number of AP and honors courses available to the average high school kid these days. Also, it depends if his school grades on a ten point spread (80-89 = B, for example) or a 7 point (94-100 = A).
My daughter graduated from high school in 2010 with a 4.8 GPA on a 7 point spread.......and was 48th in her class. The valedictorian graduated with a 5.1GPA, and is now in medical school at UNC. The high school in question -- one of the top in NC, as well as a Top 200 nationwide -- had a graduation rate of 99% that year, and was 98% for nearly a decade.
While Ivy League schools are largely overpriced, the connections you can make -- if you know how to network as a teenager/early 20-something -- can be life-changing.

Most people who have applied to college know that your overall resume matter more than one test does.
a kid with who took Piano, Video production, Key Club, and Forestry Club with a 3.5 GPA is more likely to get into one of the upper echelon schools than the person with a 4.0 who did nothing else.
