There is still no clear sense of how many Republicans might run for president this year, but clearly it is going to be quite a few. Possibly around 15, maybe as many as 20.
In any case, this has raised some question as to how the Republican debates will be handled, as 15 or 20 people in a debate is clearly too many. Fox News has arrived at an answer for their debate, presumably with the approval of the Republican National Committee, which regulates these matters. Fox will allow the top 10 contenders to participate, which it seems to me is still probably too many for a single debate.
As more candidates enter the 2016 Republican presidential race, questions have been raised as to how debate organizers will accommodate such a large field.
The Washington Post reports that Fox News, which hosts the first debate in Cleveland on Aug. 6, has devised a criteria for participation. Candidates will have to register in the top 10 of the average of the five most recent polls by “major, nationally recognized organizations,” ahead of the debate that conform to “standard methodological techniques,” The Post reports, citing a release.
The release states that the network will provide supplemental coverage on the day of the debate to GOP contenders who do not qualify to participate.
No word on the structure for the Democratic debates, or if Hillary Clinton will agree to participate in them, if there in fact are any.
Maybe this time around the Republican candidates will go to all the debates they are invited to. in 2007 when they had debates, only 3 or 4 of the candidates would show up to some of the debates and the audience would be visibly disappointed as they had been given programs with all the candidates who had been invited and promised off camera Q&A's

What I have heard is that there will be 6 debates, and currently it looks like Clinton and Sanders are the two that seem serious about it. I would like to see more.
But I agree with the OP,. even 10 seems like a lot of folks. Maybe do a 10-8-6 format eliminating people based upon polling immediately before each scheduled debate.

Polls?
What polling?
I can make any poll go the way I wish....
I bet money, they try like hell to make sure Ted Cruz is not going to be debating any of the Establishments chosen.

Dunno. If they exclude Cruz a LOT of his followers might choose to sit out the final election. That seems like a way to lose the game by rigging the pregame.

I dont know if I would say that was the deciding factor, but it certainly did not help him. The shenanigans that were involved n excluding some folks from the Republican side were truly low.
