There is molestation in many more families than anyone would like to believe. It is NEVER discussed, but it is there. It is done by fathers, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, family friends, clergy, anyone with access. And is even done by females to males, and females to other females. None of it is ever discussed.

But I agree with an earlier post, the Duggars are no different than any other family.

Did they handle this well? They didn't handle it the way I would, but it's easy for us, in retrospect, to say what they should have done and what we would have done.

I don't know them, they're family & I don't know the truth of the situation. I'm not in a position to judge.

If you were reading a news report about someone accused of this crime and that person was completely unknown to you, would you regard that person as a pedophile?

If the shoe fits...
That is not what I read. If you have the link, please share it. I've seen where people have written down the age of the sisters and assumed that he molested all of them. The only article I read that stated the ages of the victims listed them as teenage girls. Of course I can't find THAT link to post.

and No, I am not going to jump to the conclusion that a 14 year is a pedophile.

So I just read the police report. All 33 pages. There are no ages anywhere on the document. So again, I'm still not willing to jump t the conclusion that a 14 year old is a mentally ill pedophile.

Molestation happens in MANY MANY MANY families. These secrets need to come out - this is the only way to have any healing, any addressing of the problem, so that it isn't allowed to flourish because no one understands that it happens OFTEN or addresses it. It's a HUGE problem and it's time for it to be addressed, as ALL MENTAL ILLNESSES need to be addressed, not hidden.

Molestation is horrible, horrible, horrible. It's like a murder of a child's soul.

But what strikes me about this story is that the parents acted to deal with Josh. They told their church elders about Josh. They took Josh to the state trooper. They sent Josh away for treatment (a program that doesn't seem to have been licensed or accredited and therefore probably wasn't qualified to assess Josh's problems never mind treat them). But where was their rush of concern for their daughters. What kind of counseling did the girls get? They may have thought that Josh's molestation was so mild that the girls didn't even wake up, so the girls didn't need counseling. But it also goes to a belief that the purpose of women is to bear children, a sexual purpose. And that a non-religiously affiliated counselor would have been counseling the girls that they control their bodies, that they get to say no to a man.

I think that the parents tried to do what was best, but I think they also knew that if outside authorities were involved, that those outside authorities would have said that the parents efforts fell short.

Also, the molestation occurred in 2002/2003. Was the father still in the Arkansas legislature at that time? Or running for re-election? Because if so, then you have the added dimension of a politician wanting to avoid scandal, at what cost?
As far as the 'counseling'

"...here was another reported incident 9 months later. According to the police report, the police were not immediately contacted. Instead, Jim Bob, the dad, met with church elders and agreed Josh should be put in a treatment program. The police report says Josh’s mom, Michelle, said it wasn’t really a treatment center … they simply sent Josh to a guy who was remodeling a building to do manual labor".

Would you at least conclude that Josh was behaving in a sexually deviant manner? It is normal for a 14-year old boy to have sexual urges and curiosity and the female body. It IS not normal to act on those urges with one's SISTERS! I have 3 brothers, and I can assure you that nothing like that ever took place in our house, neither have I EVER met a woman who said a brother had touched her inappropriately. If this were common, I think I would have known/heard of at least one person who had experienced it.

So call him what you want: deviant, pervert, pedophile. What he did is not normal.

2003- another victim advises that Josh is molesting her, and others too, say that Josh is molesting them. Jim Bob meets with members of the church, who suggest a program of hard work and counseling for Josh. Which actually was a summer job with a family friend who owned a construction company, and there was no counseling.Josh apologized to victims, "who forgive him".

Jim Bob told police in 2006 that when Josh returned home in 2003, Jim Bob, accompanied by some of his church elders, took Josh to Arkansas State Trooper, Jim Hutchens. Jim Bob knew Hutchens personally. Hutchens did not take any official action and instead gave Josh a “very stern talk.” As In Touch magazine reports exclusively in this week’s issue, Hutchens is now serving 56-years in prison for child pornography. He took no action on the Duggar case.
So, instead of any action, they took him to a family friend, who gave Josh a stern talking to. And, as it turns out, that family friend is now serving time for "child porn" (no mention of it was possession, manufacture, distribution). Well, that certainly doesn't seem like punishment or counseling.
further:

When police asked Jim Bob to bring Josh in for an interview in 2006, he attempted to hire a lawyer and refused to produce his son for questioning. At least two lawyers refused to take his case. “Det. Hignite received a voice mail from Mr. Duggar stating that [redacted] had hired an attorney and would not be coming in for an interview.”

So, the family refused to cooperate with authorities.

Yet, one cannot point out their hypocrisy without being a hypocrite themselves, because none of us are perfect?

I have to agree.

His behavior was not appropriate, but I can't agree that he's a PEDOPHILE.

Pedophilia or paedophilia is a psychiatric disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children, generally age 11 years or younger. As a medical diagnosis, specific criteria for the disorder extend the cut-off point for prepubescence to age 13. A person who is diagnosed with pedophilia must be at least 16 years of age, but adolescents must be at least five years older than the prepubescent child for the attraction to be diagnosed as pedophilia.

Pedophilia is termed pedophilic disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), and the manual defines it as a paraphilia in which adults or adolescents 16 years of age or older have intense and recurrent sexual urges towards and fantasies about prepubescent children that they have either acted on or which cause them distress or interpersonal difficulty. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) defines it as a sexual preference for children of prepubertal or early pubertal age.

Kayanne:

You are kidding yourself. It is very common. What? You think women you know are just going to say, over coffee, "Oh you know my brother used to get up on me when we were kids." Uh, no! Can you imagine the shame?! Just look at the reactions here. You are delusional if you think you don't know anyone. You just don't know anyone who has ADMITTED it out loud to you.

I agree. I have a brother and that NEVER happened to me. EVER.

While Josh Duggar might not meet the clinical/legal/psychological definition of a pedophile per se, I think we can agree that his behavior was deviant and cause for great concern.

Plus, the impact on the victims is the same whether he was 14 or 16 (old enough to be considered a pedophile). My heart aches for his victims.
