You make this sound overly simplistic. The thing is, everything is relative. Some people's life's will excel greatly, others not so much. You can make an argument we are already at that point compared to life 50/100 years ago - yet a large segment of society certainly do not seem pleased with life.
LOL. OK go back 100 years. I assure you, a LOT more people on the planet are enjoying life far more. yeah we ***** and moan. But earlier today I strapped on the latest VR helmet, and played around on the surface of mars from the point of view of the mars lander.
And simplistic? OK I know a lot of people dont keep up with technology, but:
Lockheed martin says they will have fusion in 8 years...and they are one of half a dozen companies saying the same.
Even without figuring out the light based chips, moores law will have a computer with the processing power of a human brain in my lifetime.
Self driving cars
We have serious companies with serious money backing them investigating asteroid mining. Go look at some of the data, asteroids contain immense amounts of materials.
CRISPR gene modification, and the beginning of designer babies being designed around increased IQ
EMDrive producing some fascinating results
3D printing is beginning to drop in price for metal prints
VR, and now AR with hololens
I could go on. Its not any one of these that is whats going to do this, its all the combinations that suddenly get us some wild stuff going on. If half of them fail, the other half alone will change our world in truly amazing ways. The automation thats coming? Incredible stuff.
People don't seem to realize that automation eliminates many jobs, but it also creates many as well. You have to ensure that the automated system is running, and it requires expertise and domain knowledge. Also people overlook the supply chain that when it comes to assembling kiosk.
Why is it that when some robots are left in the darkness they will seek out the light? Why is it that when robots are stored in an empty space they will group together rather than stand alone, how do we explain this?
This has nothing to do with minimum wage. Automation is going to happen regardless of what fast food workers are paid right now. Still, to be gleeful about fellow Americans potentially losing their jobs seems pretty un-Christian and psychotic.
BTW, do regressive right wingers eat nowhere else but McDonald's? They sure seem to talk it up a lot. I've literally eaten there once in the past year.
Eventually, we will become a Society split between those that just want get by and those that want to excel. The people that want to get ahead in life will have to pay for the slackers. Oh wait, we are already there. I see min wage, fast food workers going the way of the ice and milk man. Better think about living on a welfare lifestyle, existing but not much quality of life. Our choice.
You don't really believe 10 percent of the population will be willing to support the other 90 percent, do you?
They might pay for euthanasia and sterilization programs, though.
I know the right loves to claim this is about $15/hr. Its not. The cost of robotics is falling, these people are going to get replaced no matter what. The whole "OMG robots are taking over because of minimum wage nonsense is just that-nonsense. Robotics will be replacing 40% of the workforce n the next 20 years-not because they are just cheaper, but because they wont make as many mistakes, and will be more reliable.
The push for higher wages, which include strikes and work slowdowns, however, only make the decision to switch to robots much easier. Seriously, how many mistakes are there putting salt on fries and ketchup on a big mac? Machines already time the cooking process.
"The whole "OMG robots are taking over because of minimum wage nonsense is just that-nonsense."
Of course it is nonsense! It is extortion/blackmail pure and simple. Follow the increased dollars to its final destination which is the government laughing all the way to the bank in higher taxes.
I see in the future, McDonalds vending machines in high volume public places saying to its patron, "Would you like fries with that burger?"
