I'm actually surprised by these poll numbers. I know it's not a scientific poll, but over 25% of voters have suggested yes, that's a sizable amount. I'm so against it myself I didn't think it'd register more than 5-10%.

Which would expand the DoD from its current 2,000,000 to 6,000,000, and 2,000,000 of those would not be fully qualified for duty.

There is zero use for that many troops. That would be an economic national disaster in peacetime and a strategic disaster in war.

Oh I completely agree, I'm very much against anyone who puts forth the idea of MANDATORY military service. Strips us of our freedom, and our high spirited volunteer military, and as you've mentioned it's something we cannot afford and would never use.

Guess I am confused.......2 yrs of military training to learn what? What do they do with this training when they get out?

That all depends on the career field of their choice (or what they qualify for). Many military make a substantial living after they leave the military in civilian careers with the training they received in the military. If you go into avionics, you can expect to command a considerable salary. If you are trained to operate a tank, not so much.

On the topic of mandatory military service, absolutely not:

- Expense (prosecuting draft evaders, setting up more processing facilities, etc.)
- Myth ("This will ensure that our politicians don't send us into an unjust war!")
- Significant opposition

That said, I have no problem with some kind of voluntary "national service" for 1-2 years, in which young adults can choose to serve in the armed forces, the peace corps, Americorps, a conservation program, tutoring kids in inner city and rural schools, or working on environmental and infrastructure projects. In exchange for that service, all student loans are automatically forgiven at the conclusion of your NS period.

Again, and where do the appropriations come from to pay for such a massive program?
