If Hollywood didn't exist, we would be better off. What positive good does Hollywood do?
The problem with Hollywood, is that everything is fake. And really, not just Hollywood, all entertainment is fake. And it creates a very unrealistic world-view, that is actually harmful.
Whether it be the fake standards of beauty(from surgeries, makeup, etc). Or its the fake "causes" that these entertainers get associated with, to get their name in the papers. Or just the generally fake/unrealistic depictions of human life that is portrayed in movies, and especially in modern sitcoms.
Almost all the modern TV shows designed for women, are completely classless, filled full of women sleeping around with practically every guy they meet. Most likely because the writers are too lazy to come up with an actual storyline. Then women(especially young women) begin to think this kind of behavior is "normal".
Its disgusting. Though I more blame ****ty Americans than Hollywood.
Regardless, Hollywood makes society worse. No sane person would think otherwise.
It creates/provides LOTS of jobs.
As for the OP's thesis, I have a hard time believing that conservatives are not part and parcel of the opening day crowds for movies like "Fast & Furious..." or "The Avengers" and other blockbusters.
Can anyone say otherwise?
I said "other than well-established" actors. Eastwood, Schwartzenegger, Sandler, Willis, etc. are famous enough to come out as Conservative and not destroy their career. As for the bulk of that list, if you remove the 10 or so who are dead, the blue-collar comedians, musicians, athletes or actors who haven't gotten any significant work in the past 20 years, the list shrinks down to a handful. Jon Voight, Tony Danza, Heather Locklear, Dean Cain and Stephen Baldwin aren't exactly drowning in roles.
The book "Primetime Propaganda" is loaded with interviews straight from TV writers and producers who openly and shamelessly discuss how they discriminated against Conservatives in the industry going as far back as the 70's.
Did you know that Tony Danza has had a very successful Broadway/musical career for the past few years?
His choice.
Jon Voight is a regular on a Showtime TV series.
Dean Cain works a lot. Just look at his IMDB. He has a ton of stuff listed for this year. Dean Cain - IMDb
Heather, well, I suspect she's just aged out, as sadly, so many women seem to do. That has nothing to do with being con or lib. That just show business.
Stephen Baldwin is just crazy. I've a feeling that people simply don't want to work with him, period.
I have a friend from school days that came from a conservative family, he describes himself as conservative, and was trying his luck in Hollywood, I never talked to him after school, so I can not say it remains a conservative .. .I think that living in an environment like hollywood does not favor much the continue a conservative.
Look, prostitution creates jobs. The manufacture and sale of marijuana creates jobs. For that matter, legalizing methamphetamine would create jobs. It doesn't make it a good thing.
Regardless, your statement reminds me of this Luis CK standup.
Anyone who talks about "jobs" in the abstract sense, is either a politician, an economist, or is being duped by one.
Besides, if Hollywood didn't exist, people wouldn't be unemployed(at least not for any length of time). They would just do something else. To the extent that there is ever "high unemployment", it is more of a wage problem than a labor problem.
With all that said, it doesn't change the fact that Hollywood is complete and utter garbage. And the actual locality called "Hollywood", is the biggest pile of garbage on the planet. One part is a tourist trap, and the other side is nothing but drugs and prostitution(and you should know that being from Newport Beach).

Filmmaking is equal to drugs and prostitution everybody!
You can always tell when some writer (male or female) who writes for a TV show is having a baby. They push it on the characters. It usually signals the show is on the way out. That's the reason why we have had all of these so-called superheroes that look like writers instead of the kind of men women really want to rescue them. It's like they recruit male actors from prep school, these days. Don't any blue collar types become actors anymore? Only in the writers minds can the nerdy guys get the best looking women. Oh yeah, and the Hispanic maids/nannys that are all saints? Only in Hollywood where they let them raise their kids. They write about what they know. When is the last time you saw a family attend church together on Sunday in a movie that wasn't labeled a Christian movie or wasn't about some scandal? I can think of two, Ladder 49 (2004) and Above The Law (Stephen Segal - 1988). How about any made in the last 10 years?
Hollywood is about making money. Nothing else. Maybe, these left wing wack jobs that some of you are so upset about actually reflect our country more accurately and YOU are the wack job. think about it...
Living in Los Angeles and seeing the industry up front, the reason why people are back and forth with Hollywood being liberal or conservative is because it's actually both.
The writers, actors and crew tend to be left wing. They're in unions and see just how the heads of the studios rip them off even in regards to million dollar contracts. The heads of the studios tend to be conservative even if they vote Democrat. They chase the bottom dollar.
A lot of actors and producers are also libertarian so that's why you'd see them do one move that pushes for gay rights and then another that seems anti-union.
You'll see an actor who you thought was left wing because they did a movie that was scathing against govt corruption and then do a Hollywood blockbuster that praises the military and 'Murica in a blatantly jingoistic way.
For one I found The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel to be very right wing.

I haven't seen American Sniper yet but the most surprising thing about it is that they are surprised it made money.
Unrelated to conservative/liberal, I'm an older adult. Hollywood has practically told me that they will not be putting out any movies for me in the summer. Plus, they have also practically announced, "Don't bother to look for a quality movie unless it's 4 - 6 weeks before Oscar time. The rest of the year we put out the junk."
A couple of weeks ago - it was called "A Bone to Pick: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery."
Brand new movie.
Granted, it did run on the Hallmark Movie & Mystery channel, but, it sure wasn't billed as a "Christian" movie despite the fact that one of the main characters is a Reverend.
Have to hide their beliefs in order to keep working? Who told you that fairy tale? Check out this list of 50 big name Conservative Republican actors and you'll see that most of them have made a very good living in Hollywood and they aren't hiding anything to get jobs. IMDb: Conservative or Republican Actors - a list by DustedRevolver
Shoot. That list doesn't even scratch the surface. There are far more than just those actors, and many are still living.
And remember that for every actor, there are a host of others behind the scenes. The entire Disney corporation is quite conservative from top to bottom, and for every picture that gets screened, the conservatives who worked on it are very similar in number to the national average.
This is even more true with the screen writers, the people who create the stories. If a person begins studying the themes of most of the biggest hit pictures of the 21st century, a large majority of the screenplays have very conservative beliefs in them, often as a heroic reaction to the oppressive villains. This extends all the way down to the flicks that have robots as the main characters.
The notion that Hollywood is some kind of liberal redoubt is nonsense, and has been for 20 years or more. The last time Hollywood was a liberal town, ironically, was when Reagan, one of the conservative's own, was President.
