You guys, our footprint is inevitable that's fine. But we may as well take care of the planet as best we can, obviously we don't need to live in caves, but for instance the technology exists for alternate fuels, but the gas companies are too greedy to let that technology get out!

Take a look at the electric companies.
Go solar still tied to the grid and see how well you are received by the electric company about them buying back energy from you.

The utilities companies are not all embracing net metering where they buy back your excess energy.
Utilities want solar users to pay more

Alternate energies are rocking the boat of the monopolies.
Monopolies in all areas are being threatened with the "little guy" doing it himself.
They are doing whatever they can to keep their throne at the top of the heap.

It's like in total recall, when that bad guy is selling oxygen when all along they had a reactor that made mars a liveable atmosphere.

If you or someone you loved was on life support would you trust the system to be powered by solar or wind

Wow......you can always have a backup generator, it doesn't mean you need to use it all the time, or a hybrid system.

Why exactly would they be? First, solar is not a reliable, uniform power source. The output varies with the time of day and with cloud cover. When the sun is shining brightly and solar systems are putting out max power, they can oversupply the grid. Meaning that suddenly other sources of power have to be shut down to keep from overloading the grid. They do so, things are humming along and supply and demand are balanced...and the sun goes behind a cloud. Solar power output drops, line voltage with it. Now the power companies need to compensate by firing up their systems-systems that are reliable and put out steady, sustained power and do not respond well to being flipped "on and off".

I have no problem with individuals being contracted for net metering. But if that happens, they should be contractually obligated to supply a continuous, steady output of XXX watts between the hours of say 6:00 am and 10:00 pm. If their solar output drops off, they should have backup systems in place to meet their obligations, either battery backup or generators. The non-solar power consumers shouldn't have to pay a premium for a grid system overly "loaded" by the variable power of these people's systems, nor should they have to pay a higher cost to support the backup systems required to handle load balancing of hobbiests solar or wind power systems.

In other words solar is not worth betting your life on.
