Marcus Garvey was instrumental in the back to Africa movement, and they would braid their hair as a way of showing support for it. No lies being spoken.
I think many non-blacks who oppose reparations would support it if part of the $$$ had to be used to go to Africa, or anywhere else.
Of course, in real life the economy is not static like a Monopoly board, and
hence not zero sum, but advantage and greed allows those who have been allowed
to start the game from the beginning to accumulate most of the new opportunities
and wealth when the pie grows. Thus, given that laws were not such to allow
African Americans equal opportunity into Americas dynamic game of Monopoly,
blacks, as a collective, have inherited disadvantage relative to whites as a
collective. True, what is true for the whole is not necessarily true of each
part, thus, you can find exceptions to the general rule if you want to play that
game.....but the larger truth is THE RULE. A case study example of this is how
VA home loans were allocated after WWII and the role that home ownership and
value plays in wealth.
No one can deny, our past was rough. Ill even agree that the effects of our past still lives. But I disagree with what you call the rule vs exceptions. But the main reson I disagree with you here is that although the ill effects of our past is still alive, they aren't the biggest issues in the black community.

Can't deny anything you said here. But, IMO, its still irrelevant to our problems of today. What you've said here is also the common argument that confuses me the most. Im 41. When I grew up all I heard was, "just because your black don't meant you should (add something negative), or being poor is no excuse for (add something negative). Now in current times, I here that being black is valid reason for ( add something negative) and being poor is a valid reason (add something negative). It actually kind of sad to hear this argument being made.

But the sooner we learn to play the hand we are dealt and not the hand we want or think we should have, the better we would be. But surely NOT enough to influence the people who are the decedents of people like Harriet Tubman, MLK,Rosa Parks, etc... We all know its only a crime if you get caught. Maybe, just maybe if we did things a little different those crime statistics in our community would look a little more like those seen in the white community.

The history of America has proven over and over again that fairness and equality is not what they will give to us, so keep your mentally sanity and stop believing that it will ever change. I truly believe that this must be a spiritual test, and that our justice will be seen in another realm of life. Justice and equality will never be a realization for us collectively, so we must find healthy outlets to allow us to accept what we cannot change. The powers to be are real. Accept your plight, and just do the best you can to stay mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually healthy.
The ongoing question for me is "Why does it continue?" I am never going to receive a answer that will make any logical sense to me, so I cannot continue to live the rest of my life in this realm believing that I will get an answer that will be justified for this ongoing injustice. While we are being candid, I'll pay you the same favor. The majority, I believe, of the whites that don't particularly care for Blacks is based on behaviors observed through the decades and trillions spent to make things better if not perfect?
A lot of whites don't care for blacks. A lot of blacks certainly don't care for whites. The Hispanics quietly assess and move up along with the Asians and Hindus. Indians are left out if anyone ever was.
So, where does that leave us?
White views: Blacks can be downright scary. With their steady appetite of violence and mayhem, most simply can't trust you and are somewhat scared of you. Statistics would prove them accurate, to some degree, of this assessment. Fact, not fiction. 12-14 percent of the US population and yet, 50-60 percent of those incarcerated. I have a son who is a prison guard in a Maximum security prison. 70% of the inmates are black, 15% are white, 15% are Hispanic and other races.
The majority of the problems they deal with, DAILY, are from blacks. And believe it or not, the main culprits are NOT murderers. Those, believe it or not, are usually respectful and easier to work with. The real D-bags are the career losers. 3-5 times convicted of robberies, strong arm or otherwise, rape, incest, child molestation and abuse, drugs....repeat, drugs (distribution of 10lbs or more of marijuana and several kilos of the finest blow and heroin available). These are the ones that fight, stab, toss feces and are in the SHU more than not. Fact, not fiction. He tells me the day by day routine. Downright depressing sometimes. I feel sorry for most prison guards. Shiite job with Shiite pay.
The whites tend to be scrappy but, no social cause. The few skinheads are for the most part, ignored by everyone including the rest of their own. Odd ducks. They tend to be higher order criminals with less violence. Robbers, Rapists, child molesters, and some white collar crooks. Shocking. Right?

Asians and Hindus? Non-existent. Too smart. While certain factions of society are consistently into all sorts of ill Shiite, these guys/gals get ahead and settle scores internally. Admirable. And you wonder why they are all becoming doctors, lawyers, engineers, and web developers?
Now, that's a snapshot but, it illustrates the fabric of society as a whole. Blacks, statistically speaking, simply commit more crimes. You can debate it all you want but, the stats are overtly clear. You can justify it all you want due to "lack of opportunity" but, that's BS and for the most part, you know it. Anytime you get an opportunity, 1/2 of you f it up, period. Case in point. Chicago's murder rate is astronomical and 90 percent is due to drugs and dealing on the near in West side. You know it, I know it, the world knows it.
You have perversely abused the "system" to your advantage between nuisance lawsuits, affirmative action, and set asides that NO one cares for you much anymore. Ever see a white person try to get a guvmint job in any local city? Ain't happening so long as Blacks are in power and openly discriminate against whites with NO repercussions. Fact, not fiction. You know it, I know it, and the world knows it.
We believe in hiring on merit and ability. White, black, poka dot, doesn't matter. You? Color. Same reason you voted our President in twice where anyone that has taken the most basic economics course knows he is a disaster. Fact, not fiction. The irony is that whites got your guy in and not so much as a thank you. Chances are, they won't make that mistake twice. We don't believe we owe you anything anymore.
Was there overt racism in the past? You bet. In spades. Your grandparents and to some extent, parents, are owed some concessions. Modern blacks? Not a one. Your entitlement mentality is legendary. And to that extent, the newer generation is somewhat despised as they have come to work the system quite well and it detracts from the blacks who have worked their assets off, did all the right things are WELCOMED into white society. After all, who doesnt' like the look of Vanessa Williams? And while she may have a good dose of cream in her coffee, she's beautiful. Now, contrast that to the other 90% called Taquasia, Lestoil, Lavoris, Candeesha, Comet, LaVoris or other household cleaning products and you get the point. What your ancestors wouldn't have done to have the rights, set asides and help you receive today....
Entitlements were never meant to be a way of life. In your society, they are considered sound financial planning. And to that end, we resent you.
Blacks: Angry. What for? For any reason some of their questionable esteemed leaders say. All of our leaders are not perfect. We hate a LOT of white leaders (Hillary, Pelosi, Reid, and 1/2 a dozen child molesting d-bags) but, unlike you, we do NOT defend them no matter what? Blacks hate whites for any reason given and yet, they have never done as well as they are doing today because of them and ironically, they are less grateful for the corrections and trillions spent over 50 years helping them to get up in society. For those that did, Ben Carson for example, EVERY white applauds them. And the list is long and honorable.
However, for whatever reason, there is a cadre in your society that shows up to every social mayhem and claims "it's time to have a serious discussion"....about what? About how some of you quit burning everything to the ground that you didn't pay for and perhaps we will. Until THAT day, we will endlessly debate the trillions spent while you endlessly demand for trillions more? Good luck with that. Besides, ever see a bunch of whites burn down anything whenever one of theirs is killed by one of yours????
Blacks also tend to honor social and not merit. Show me a Ray Lewis, questionable murdering thug, and blacks get in line to hopefully get knocked up by the guy for some cash (like what's his name from Jacksonville that clipped his pregnant girlfriend and went to jail forever over it). Shooting one another is a way for some of you to gain some sort of perverse sense of credibility amongst other blacks. Shoot each other to gain respect. Odd. Maybe if you HELPED each other you would/could gain even more respect? At the very least save you a bundle on bandages, peroxide and numerous trips to the hospital....oh, that's, right, while they may have a roll of bills in their pockets, they don't pay them. The tax payers (Read: predominantly white), do. And you wonder why THEY don't care for you? You are simply becoming to expensive....spensive for some of you....

Are all blacks this way? Certainly not. But, there is an undercurrent of hatred towards whites and fear of Hispanics and Asians proving how to make a go of it in your neighborhoods thus dispelling the entire myth of no opportunity. Hah. As if. If an outsider can come in and make a convenience store work, then how can you fail for 30-40 years at it???
You don't need more set asides or opportunity. This is America. You can do almost anything you want if you are willing to work overtly hard for it (See Asians, hindus and their success in medical and engineering), or, have enough set asides to see you through.
Maybe the frustration comes from a deep understanding that you are your own worse enemy and like all humans, Black, White, Yellow, Brown, whatever, it's easier to blame someone for your failures than to take accountability and responsibility for them. Guys like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have made a living off your backs helping to point fingers at the reason(s) why YOU failed. Being black means never having to say you are sorry or accountable. That might have worked for the last 50 years but, based on the growing Hispanic population, smart money says it won't last another 50. Agitate, agitate, agitate......apparently, you did learn that well....no matter the outcome(s).
If you think you hate whites, wait until the Hispanics get over you. You will finally know what HARD work is all about. When they can vote in huge numbers, your set asides will be split and more and more of everyone's taxes will go to help them and not so much you. Hatred is a curse we all endure. Despite that, most of us function quite well. I think there are less whites that hate blacks than the other way around. As far as being put on, get in line. Ever see how the Italians, Irish were treated a hundred years or so ago? The Chinese? You are not the only race that has ever been enslaved (and in some cases, by your own). You are just the most recent on this scale.
However, the last time I checked, we haven't owned a slave in over 150 years. Get over it. There are no remaining slaves left alive and I'm pretty sure the last one died about 40 years or more ago??? To hold on to that like it's still active and you get no breaks is laughable. Watch a friendly black talk with a white. Not an issue. Never is. You know, like when they were voting for your guy in 2008 and 2012. Blacks were on pretty good behavior during those cycles. Just remember, no one likes being used. The backlash from society will be worse and nullify a LOT of gains later.

No matter, the fight for equal rights is a jobs program for a handful of people. The rights are already there. Carved in stone. The courts are in your favor and there is a lawyer on every corner. If I had a nickel for every poor performing black I saw in corporate America these last 30 years who couldn't be fired, I would be rich. Conversely, if I had a nickel for every white that had to tiptoe and was the first to get laid off despite their performance and was held to higher performance standards I would be richer.
No matter, believe it or not, it IS getting better. If you truly, truly want the barriers to fall, start acting like it and quit blaming everyone for your p-poor performance. Keep in mind that my thesis is not to explain "black problems", but rather, I am explaining the socioeconomic gaps that exist between blacks and whites.....as of course....white folks have problems too....as do all peoples. Thus, I am talking about the general rule which defines the ROOT cause of why blacks rate or propensity for a condition or behavior is higher than whites, notwithstanding that there are exceptions (there are always exceptions).

Well....I do not know what you are talking about. Every action creates a reaction. If the act is upon blacks...then it explains the reaction upon blacks. Every actions has an impact, whether it be racism or poverty or whatever.....there is a reaction to those conditions. Call it blame or excuse.....but that is how nature works. Actions beget reactions.

That is really silly. You think I did not know that one cannot change the past.....until you just mentioned the fact that it cannot be changed? We could not change the fact that Germany invaded its neighbors creating the catalysts and destruction of WWII.....yet, after the fact there was a herculean effort to restore the economies of Europe, as well as Japan, after the fact. Where there is a will and where their is faith, there is a way. When it comes to blacks, however, there is no will because there is no faith that we are EQUAL and hence worthy of such effort. People do not invest in things that are seen as inherently inferior because there is an assumed negative return on investment....this assumption, by the power that be, create the self fulfilling prophecy that makes the assumption true.

But what seem to ignore is the fact we have a CHOICE on how we react. The CHOICE is as relevant an issue as the initialaction. We put more than enough emphasis on the past/action. But we spend very little time examining the choices/reactions we make.

This is where we disagree the most. Any other nationality can come to this country and do well. Blacks in this country are able to do well. So I guess we have a difference of opinion of who it actually is that lacks will and/or faith in the black community and IMO, it aint white people.
Black people don't know what it's like to walk in
anyone else's shoes, but we sure do make grandiose assumptions on what white
peoples' lives must be like. We assume that all white people are the beneficiary
of "white privelege" and that all white people are generally in a better
position to succeed in America simply because they are white. We dismiss the
struggles that many white people, much like many other Americans, face day to
day. And typically, "white privelege" is not available to conveniently rescue
them from those struggles.
If anyone were to
walk in my shoes as a black man, they'd find that my struggles are fairly
similar to those of many other Americans. I work, pay bills, and take care of my
family and try to keep the roof over our heads. I rarely, if ever, spend any
considerable amount of time fighting against racial discrimination leveraged
against me, because it almost never happens. And that's really the case for most
black people in 2015. "Walking in our shoes" most likely won't reveal some
groundbreaking racist experience that requires white understanding and empathy,
as you imply.
On the OP, IMO nothing in life is fair. I am a black woman and I do acknowledge that there is racial prejudice and stereotyping and it does take disturbing levels when black Americans are spoken about but I don't expect anything in life to be fair as fairness is subjective.

Show me a Ray Lewis, questionable murdering thug, and blacks get in line to hopefully get knocked up by the guy for some cash (like what's his name from Jacksonville that clipped his pregnant girlfriend and went to jail forever over it). Shooting one another is a way for some of you to gain some sort of perverse sense of credibility amongst other blacks. Shoot each other to gain respect. Odd. Maybe if you HELPED each other you would/could gain even more respect? At the very least save you a bundle on bandages, peroxide and numerous trips to the hospital....oh, that's, right, while they may have a roll of bills in their pockets, they don't pay them. The tax payers (Read: predominantly white), do. And you wonder why THEY don't care for you? You are simply becoming to expensive....spensive for some of you....

Are all blacks this way? Certainly not. But, there is an undercurrent of hatred towards whites and fear of Hispanics and Asians proving how to make a go of it in your neighborhoods thus dispelling the entire myth of no opportunity. Hah. As if. If an outsider can come in and make a convenience store work, then how can you fail for 30-40 years at it???
You don't need more set asides or opportunity. This is America. You can do almost anything you want if you are willing to work overtly hard for it (See Asians, hindus and their success in medical and engineering), or, have enough set asides to see you through.
Maybe the frustration comes from a deep understanding that you are your own worse enemy and like all humans, Black, White, Yellow, Brown, whatever, it's easier to blame someone for your failures than to take accountability and responsibility for them. Guys like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have made a living off your backs helping to point fingers at the reason(s) why YOU failed. Being black means never having to say you are sorry or accountable. That might have worked for the last 50 years but, based on the growing Hispanic population, smart money says it won't last another 50. Agitate, agitate, agitate......apparently, you did learn that well....no matter the outcome(s).
If you think you hate whites, wait until the Hispanics get over you. You will finally know what HARD work is all about. When they can vote in huge numbers, your set asides will be split and more and more of everyone's taxes will go to help them and not so much you. Going on a limb here but, no matter how many he lets in, they will turn on you when THEY start paying a good portion of the taxes....
Hatred is a curse we all endure. Despite that, most of us function quite well. I think there are less whites that hate blacks than the other way around. As far as being put on, get in line. Ever see how the Italians, Irish were treated a hundred years or so ago? The Chinese? You are not the only race that has ever been enslaved (and in some cases, by your own). You are just the most recent on this scale.
However, the last time I checked, we haven't owned a slave in over 150 years. Get over it. There are no remaining slaves left alive and I'm pretty sure the last one died about 40 years or more ago??? To hold on to that like it's still active and you get no breaks is laughable. Watch a friendly black talk with a white. Not an issue. Never is. You know, like when they were voting for your guy in 2008 and 2012. Blacks were on pretty good behavior during those cycles. Just remember, no one likes being used. The backlash from society will be worse and nullify a LOT of gains later.
Funny thing about liberal whites. They are all about causes until it affects them and their kids. Kind of like they are fine with black kids until Dominque shows up to take their daughter out and he wears size 14 shoes at age 15. I call it the Colorado/Montana, Washington State/Oregon syndrome. They are all for it until more than a few of you show up. Hypocrisy is alive and well in the NW. Fact, not fiction. Start causing mayhem there and your Denzel appeal will vanish like a fart in the wind. Burn one of those cities and see what happens. Especially in Montana.....incoming!!!!
No matter, the fight for equal rights is a jobs program for a handful of people. The rights are already there. Carved in stone. The courts are in your favor and there is a lawyer on every corner. If I had a nickel for every poor performing black I saw in corporate America these last 30 years who couldn't be fired, I would be rich. Conversely, if I had a nickel for every white that had to tiptoe and was the first to get laid off despite their performance and was held to higher performance standards I would be richer.
No matter, believe it or not, it IS getting better. If you truly, truly want the barriers to fall, start acting like it and quit blaming everyone for your p-poor performance. Be more like Condoleeza Rice, the esteemed Senator from South Carolina, Tim Scott and you will be AMAZED at how little resistance there is to your acceptance. Keep acting like Loc Dog and Ashtray and it will be decades before ANTYHING changes. That, or whenever the Hispanics get their wings. Whichever comes first.
You are not special nor am I. We are both simply trying to work peacefully. it's time for affirmative action, EOE, and other set asides to end so you can truly compete on a level playing field and we can all see what you are made of. As long as you insist on these, there will be no equality. Fact, not fiction. No one likes a rigged game. This is no different.
Asians and Hindus? They think the rest of us are simply stupid and are dumbfounded how we both fail while they continue to succeed.
Indians: Quiet observers and outside of their casino cartels, don't stand a chance and if ANYONE got screwed it was them. Whitey took it, Blacks were dragged in and ruined it, Hispanics are rebuilding it, and Hindus and Asians will eventually run it......close?
On the OP, IMO nothing in life is fair. I am a black woman and I do acknowledge that there is racial prejudice and stereotyping and it does take disturbing levels when black Americans are spoken about but I don't expect anything in life to be fair as fairness is subjective.
You must not live around a lot of white people. I actually see this a lot and rarely see black people smoking weed or drinking in cars because they know they are more likely to be stopped. I agree with you if you see a bunch of people doing it, then they must be stupid.
Born and raised on the south side of Chicago. Have lived in majority white suburbs the past 10 years or so. Currently in a suburban area in Mississippi. Where do you live, if I may ask? Hell, we even make songs about it.
