I thought you could start collecting at 62. But you earn more by delaying.
Even so why do you think it would be such a sign of ignorance.
ETA I see this was pointed out by North Beach Person.
Yes but reduced benefits. Full benefits start at 66 in my age group. If I remember correctly, benefits increase by 8% for every year that I delay up to 70. Anyone that was born after 1947 was eligible for full benefits no earlier than 66.
It is a sign of an important disconnect between Bush and the American people.

How so?
The wording of your initial post showed you are the one with disconnect, especially since you misstated the age. You didn't qualify it by "full benefits", just "collect".
"It is a sign of an important disconnect between Bush and the American people."
Well, he is a Bush -- his father was fascinated by the function of a supermarket scanner (evidently, buying groceries was something that the help took care of).
To the broader issue, Jeb's proposal to raise the eligibility age for Social Security is electoral poison. Here's a dose of reality for would-be entitlement reformers: reducing benefits in order to preserve solvency is a far less popular option than either raising taxes or adding to the deficit/debt. Congress will never approve the former unless it's coupled with tax increases on the wealthy -- something that Democrats would eagerly campaign (and win) on.
There are lots of reasons to vote against Jeb but this ain't one of em. Major thread fail. Jeb signed PNAC's statement of principles. Will not get my vote.
Anyone who is closing in on Social Security knows that they can't get Social Security before they are 66, many later. Jeb Bush doesn't know this. He was taped on Face The Nation. He was recorded saying that Social Security should be raised from 65 to 68 or 70. Anyone who is proposing a change to a major law should know vital details of what they are talking about. Bush is making the same blunders that Romney did. He has no knowledge of the day to day problems of 99% of the people that he wants to lead.
You can earn the most by delaying up to 70 - this is what Bush was referring to ... however most people collect at 62, receive the bare minimum and then cry poverty.
I personally believe there should be no early retirement age as too many people quit at the first chance possible and it's a major cause of elderly poverty.
Basically if you are going to die before age 78 start collecting at 62. I have started smoking and drinking to excess so I can retire early.
