If you honestly believe this, you truly do not understand gun owners. No law abiding citizen wants to spray lead at the drop of a hat, people simply want the means to protect themselves, and their families.

Well, bad guys are going to have guns even if you ban them, so good guys may as well have the option to own, and carry them. Personal I don't carry a gun. Truth be told, as long as you are a law abiding citizen, and stay away from the few really bad areas that have almost all of the gun violence, the US is a very safe place.

If we had a gun culture and laws like Switzerland, I would sign up for that in a second. But it would be nothing like what we have here today. When conservatives employ Switzerland as a defense for American attitudes about guns, they're comparing apples and oranges.
Though you say otherwise, you don't appear to speak from any real knowledge on gun ownership by the Swiss. Most of what you have said is wrong.

I'm willing to bet you haven't spent much time in parts of the US where there aren't strict gun laws and engaged with the people there. Then again elitist San Francisco must be quite the bubble there.
If more people in that church had a gun then maybe more people would still be alive and the gun man be shot earlier.
If there were more guns my grand parents may have survived and not die in Auswitz and died at the hands of the Nazi's and being taken away as lame ducks but able to at least take some down.
Usually cops are too late for a shooting as they are called after the fact and perhaps can prevent another person from getting shot but they usually are not on the spot when the crazy person starts shooting.
In the Netherlands there is no gun policy and look how many people get shot every year.
To change culture and get more Americans to own guns would be a major undertaking (and its conservatives/republicans that mainly own guns.)
And republicans are not interested in expanding gun ownership or forever preserving America's gun culture. Instead republicans use guns as a campaign tool and say "the democrats want to take your guns", while they do nothing to combat America's falling gun ownership levels, ex.ex.
The corporate backed republicans don't care about guns, they only care about getting gun owners to vote for their lower corporate tax rates and corporate deregulation.
Why should they? The last war that sent draftees to to be killed was started by a liberal Democrat.
