With so much vested interest in Dubai, along with such a massive amount of American corporate and real estate investment now taking place there, I was just curious as to the possible reasons as to WHY?

WHY so MUCH invested in making Dubai the "symbol" of extreme wealth before the rest of the world?
Oil.....more than anything?

That and the UAE is trying to invest in other things so once the oil runs out they won't be camel herders again.

Default Dubai Is THe NEw America

I believe Dubai is the NEW America... I believe that China is where the US was 50 Years ago, and that the pyramid is now turning upside down. Our production has gone over seas. Their inability to buy the product they manufacture. We lose our high wages. Thus, we will soon be them and vice versa.

That is the situation "at worst". You can't compare China to the U.S. 50 years ago economically, politically, or socially.

The Chinese are on the map by re-producing the same goods made in the U.S., only at a fraction of the cost. They didn't invent anything, nor did they innovate beyond exploring how to make basic products at a faster rate, or cheaper.

Dubai is merely an alternative for investors who traditionally used London and New York as a hub for foreign investment. Condo craze set aside in Dubai, there are actually some major banks over there with more money then many mid-size European countries.

There are so many corporate incentives over there. There is no crime. It is all utter opulent wealth and business-oriented. My brother travels there quite a bit, and it is astounding. Businessmen (or women) can go deep sea fishing and then toboganning, ice skating, shopping, and then go back to an underwater hotel. Look at the pictures of Dubai in 1990 and the same street in 2003. Unbelievable. I understand Fan Island is having some construction issues, but haven't heard any more about it.

Holy ****! That is insane!

I've heard of Dubai and read articles on some of the buildings and islands, yet I thought it was some dump out in the Middle East. How wrong I was...

There is some extreme ingenuity going on here on a level never seen before. I applaud their vast efforts.

They are building Dubai with money extorted from of the rest of the world with monopoly oil pricing. Good for then and bad for us. I wonder how much they are spending on their army. I suggest waiting 10 years and then taking the place as a simple military exercise and a warning to the rest of the world that some of us can play for keeps.
