Death blow to single payer. Insurers will make even more money and will be able to fight off any desire to go to single payer. Sad day for those who thought we could do better than this slush fund for insurers.
I agree that this makes single payer virtually impossible now. However, single payer was always just a pipe dream with the almost 50% of the country that votes for conservatives adamantly opposed to doing anything. As long as the GOP base continues to get their Medicare, Republicans don't care what happens to anyone without health insurance.
Baby steps toward progress are better than nothing.
Wait, you have a trust fund but manage to pay no taxes? How does that work?
It's the magic of the Internet.
That being said, the challenge of funding healthcare for the independently wealthy is one that I completely trust the GOP as having the capacity to handle.
If they're not in network, they have no out of state maximum. It's the only plans insurance companies would offer in our state due to the larger risk they take in our state given the lower income amounts here in general. Other states differ I understand but it was nice to be able to buy what I wanted and needed before Obamacare. Now, I don't get the choice even if I am willing to pay more for a better plan. It's a major flaw of the law in my opinion.
As to this SCOTUS decision, I figured it would go this way. Didn't see this as a strong case. I still think the original SCOTUS decision on Obamacare was a poor one but then I am sure there's plenty of liberals out there who still think Citizens United was a poor decision too.
Out-of-network is an issue with private plans if you require an expert that is not within your plan. I know the VA hospitals go outside for specialties such as heart surgeons, seems like that could be a change but it would drive up cost.
Problems such as this are solvable if the motivation is there.

I disagree that this makes single payer impossible in the future. As you note, it will never happen with today's iteration of the GOP, but that is not to say that Republicans will maintain their hold as the party of regression forever. All the old Conservative Tea Party types will eventually die out and perhaps rationality will return to the party, at which time they will be more open to moving the country forward.
In the meantime, not only have millions of people been able to retain healthcare with this ruling, but the blue print of expanded Medicaid is in place to move to a single payer model when the time comes.
Hearing the justification it clear is one of most political activist decisions. Clearly states that Democrats screwed up again in writing the law thinking that as written would force states to create exchanges. The loser IMO in this is really the Supreme court as a creationist political body; just same as executive and congressional branch.
Let's see. Only Congress can pass laws. We are a nation of laws and blind justice means we are all equal under the law.
The Executive
Obama ignores laws that don't suit him and ignores constitutional mandated procedures by executive pressure on federal agencies (controlled tightly like the IRS or Justice Depart.), executive memorandums to federal agencies and by executive orders.
The Judicial
The Supreme Court doesn't make laws, Congress does, but as in the case of Obamacare, it can ignore the letter of the law, and be socially active by ignoring laws that don't suit it.
The Legislature (Congress)
Congress passes laws that the Executive and the Judiciary ignore.
Why do we need Congress?
There is a sea change occurring in this country which can't be ignored.
I'm not surprised it was upheld even though it shouldn't have been, Scalia was absolutely correct.
The previous challenge of whether the fine for not signing up was a tax was even more obvious, but the court still got it wrong. Even if someone received a subsidy to help partially pay for the monthly charge for a plan, there's a very good chance they wouldn't be able to afford the very high deductible, rendering their policy virtually worthless. If they don't sign up because of that they get fined, which is nothing more than a tax. Really disappointed with the Chief Justice for not calling it what it is.
For all the criticism FDR took for trying to 'court-pack', turns out he was right. You get three or four activists judges like Ginsberg, Soto-Mayor and Kagan on the court and very poor decisions come out of it.
That's what I don't get. People are acting as if they are getting a freebie but with the deductible so high, if they need a subsidy to pay the premiums how can they afford such a high deductible? I believe there is a cap but even with that, it still holds. Unless they are taking advantage of an HSA a lot of people are still going to have problems meeting the deductible.
