Sure, right. I live in one of the most prosperous counties in one of the most prosperous states. Though somehow it is very mixed both politically and racially, something progressive/leftist whites would neither understand or tolerate.
I suspect "feel sorry" is code for hate for many... because leftists in mostly white progressive enclaves would never admit they don't want to be any where near poor people or too many minorities...

But good news is on the way - demographic and generational change is happening in the South and will drag it to progress!
I think it's true that southern states are poorer, and their citizens lag on a whole host of measures, but the south isn't separate from American society. It's a result of this nation's choice of slavery.
Slavery enriched this whole nation, not just the south. A lot of American businesses were directly and indirectly getting money from slavery.
The south took the crushing perversion of slavery. Slavery perverted all of America, but it really perverted southern states.
Southern states became expert in erecting non democratic institutions and policies that were aimed at hurting and limiting people.
These efforts by southern business and political leaders to hurt and limit black people was the official policy of many southern states well into the 1980's.
In their learned desire to hurt and limit black people, the southern states end up hurting everyone and everything in their states.
The southern states have never invested in education, workers rights/wages, healthcare, etc for its citizens like the more prosperous states because they are constantly trying to hurt and limit black southerners. So all their citizens and economies don't do as well. It's sad really.
The elephant in the living room - most northern states are lily white. Heck, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Isalnd haven't seen a colored person since the Reagan administration.
This thread is racist. Google a map of population of African Americans by county in America.

Really? Even into the 1980s? You had me up until the 80s. None of that was happening in my area of the south in the 80s nor the mid 70s. Too young to remember the early 70s. The stuff before then is indisputable and no denying it didn't happen. Also no denying that there aren't pocket communities where such practices are looked at as "the good old days".

You do realize that the South was stripped of its assets by the Civil War and Reconstruction. They were basically cast into an abyss of a depression for decades, and the Great Depression was another huge setback for the region. They didn't invest in education or infrastructure or business development because they didn't have the resources to invest. It's not about trying to hurt/limit black southerners.

For the love of GOD, enough with the damn victimhood already! Slavery has gone on throughout time, and was practiced by numerous cultures, and sadly goes on today in certain forms! The point is, all nations and cultures have had their dark moments, which includes slavery. But it seems that for some reason American slavery was portrayed as worse than others, when in fact ALL slavery is bad! Not to mention that we keep rehashing the same regurgitated BS about the average white person in this country is trying to keep blacks down! I have an idea... since you're so ashamed of this country, and the sins of folks many who are long dead, maybe you ought to find another country that suits your needs.

Oklahoma is like that, but it not motivated to hurt blacks. Instead, it's motivated to advance corporate interests. As for education, a lot of conservatives do want to support it any further, because it is too costly.
