We don't need a wall. What we need is to bring our soldiers home from defending heroin poppy growers in Afghanistan and deploy them on the southern border. You know, defending the country from invaders and all, rather than protecting drug traffickers who hate everything about us except our money?

A wall can work both ways.

There was once a serious proposal to build a wall between the US and Canada - to keep US draft dodgers IN.

I think there are more cost-effective ways to get at this problem w/out the totalitarian implications of a wall.

There are a lot of places I'd flee to before Mexico, and besides as an illegal immigrant Mexico would just deport me.

You need a ditch instead of a wall.

A ditch is more aesthetic looking. You can make the ditch 100' wide and 100' deep. Put pretty flowers and plants and trees in the bottom of the ditch along with alligators and wolves and coyotes.

You can hail it as a biologically diverse ecosystem.

Entrenching...

I usually agree with you but not on this. It isn't only those looking for work coming here but criminals, drug dealers and would be terrorists. None of the above will deter those groups from coming in here. The double layered wall on the most porous parts of our southern border would deter them all. It was approved by congress already but never funded. Go figure. It would help the Border Patrol do their jobs more effectively. This same type of wall was built on a sector of our San Diego border and it cut illegal immigration back to a trickle so it does work.

The other things you mentioned coupled with the wall will indeed deter the job and benefit seekers though.

Here's an article about the wall.

Where U.S.-Mexico border fence is tall, it works

Adjust that for inflation and being substantially longer, that would cost quite a lot of money to build and maintain. And even if we only built the wall in populated areas, which of course renders the wall mostly pointless anyway, it would still cost significantly more than the Berlin Wall.

I think we need to ask ourselves: is a wall really the best we can do? We can't possibly handle the issue of illegal immigration in a better way?

Well, how well did the prison in Mexico do keeping in the drug lord?

They already tunneled under the wall in San Diego. Maybe a moat with alligators?

IIRC, the military is forbidden to work inside USA borders.

They will need to position a guard every 25 feet, shoot to kill. But the big contributors will not permit that.

My nephew was fired from his job running a hotel in Nevada because somebody hired an illegal. He work at a plain old hotel. Problem was, the state gave special dispensation to casinos to hire illegals.

And I wondered why Sheldon Adelson was so involved in political things.

The fix is in. Trump can do whatever he wants, but in the long haul, he will be out in the 2nd. round. The guys with the money who control all politicians will shut him down.

Absolutely build the wall. Other than cost (which liberals/progressives interestingly NEVER seem to care about), what are the downsides to it?

The wall will discourage illegal immigration. It sends a clear signal that yes, we do care about our southern border and intend to protect it. Also, think about the many American ranchers that have land next to the parts of the border that only have a small wire fence. It's not fair to them that many illegals traipse on their land, some of them even dying in the process. A wall from Tijuana to the Rio Grande only makes sense. Build it!

Ever heard of tunnel sensors? I am sure that Mexico didn't have one. No, they would not need a guard every 25 feet. Where are you getting this nonsense? There is no shoot to kill plan either. We are all aware of the greed of the employers who hire illegals but if illegals can't get through our border coupled with e-verify then it will be a huge deterrent.

You're entitled to your opinion about whether or not Trump will be out or not and I am sure you don't like Trump because he spoke out about illegal immigration but many if not most Americans were thrilled that finally a candidate had the guts to do so even if he doesn't make it in this election.

A wall would be a waste of money.
