ITA. Rep point coming up!

I also posted this somewhere in this thread - but it's a good reflection of your post. The second school is pretty comparable to an inner city school:

Quote:
It's been tried at least twice in local school districts here.

The first one is one of the best school districts in the state. The district paid approx. 2.5 million to purchase 2,940 laptops. The parents rented them for $150 a year - if you had more than 1 kid in the school, there was a sliding scale with no family paying more than $400/year. Except for a couple that were damaged, there were no issues.

The second one is not a good school district. That district paid 4.2 million for 2,200 laptops. They were free to each kid. Almost immediately, dozens were reported stolen. (With one being tracked by GPS to Mexico - and ironically, one sold on craigslist to someone who lived in the better district.) Within a year, the district finally cracked down and the laptops that remained are no longer available for home use and must remain in the school.

You nailed it! It starts at home. Until people start learning to be responsible for their own actions, and being able to provide a stable home life in a 2 parent household, nothing will change. You can build all of the parks that you want for the parks, community centers, offer free school lunches, and free computers, and it isn't going to amount to jack s*** if the kid has no parental guidance at home! Look, I'm by no means rich, and I've been through my share of BS in life (especially the last few years) but my son is in a stable home, with 2 loving parents that continue to instill good ethics into him. I'll toot my own horn, because many of the neighbors are always telling us how well mannered, respectful, and sweet he is. Now don't get me wrong, he is a pre-teen, and therefore he isn't always that way to my wife and I, but I guess that is to be expected going into teenage years, and he gets knocked down a peg or two when he tries to act a fool.

What is the conservative solution? Seggregation, and ignorance? Only to turn around and whine a little more?

The amount of faux anger displayed in this thread by so called 'conservatives' is mindboggling. At first people were angry that they were gonna 'pay for this through ther taxes,' then we learn this is gonna be funded by private companies using their money- once you give your money to private entities; is no longer yours to command, is theirs and they can do whatever they want with it. If you don't like it then don't gve your 'hard earned money' to them. If your bill goes up cause of this then switch provides- we live in a capitalist society -use it. Mostof your taxes go to pay for the military complex, social security, and medicaid and other healthcare programs. A fraction on it goes to help low income families.

Guaranteed they still won't "catch up"....if anything it'll dumb down people even more. And the wheel of excuses and free handouts will continue.

The Democratic solution is to always keep a steady stream of poverty driven votes. It never fails.

Inner city parents won't hesitate to knock their kids a peg or two. As in, literally. And I honestly think that's a significant (obviously not sole) contributor of inner city kids' grim lot in life. Physical discipline primes them for violence and is linked to a whole host of mental issues and teaches them to influence others by fear and intimidation.

Hard to be successful with that modus operandi, especially when everyone around you is the same way.

So if we're going to seriously look at family upbringings, I'd say it'd be beneficial to completely ban corporal punishment. In this country and worldwide, there's a very strong inverse correlation between quality of life and the acceptability of corporal punishment.

With Democrats it's always starts as a "funding problem"...

And when that doesn't work, it's because there wasn't enough "funding."

Interesting...considering people have been attending colleges for nearly 1000 years before the internet...and yet somehow they were able to succeed

Either way, the only way I'd be for this is if they set up larger internet stations in libraries with extended hours and be fully monitored.

That way we can force people into the library, and force them to use the internet for the intended purpose of this "gift." No facebook/social media updates, no uploading your rap mix tapes, and no porn.

Lol exactly.

If this was the opposite scenario, say, companies operating sweatshops overseas, the cons would wave it off and tell people to not use their products if they don't like it.

Besides. Their concerns are unfounded. The companies supporting this initiative don't need to raise prices much. The positive publicity they'll get for this will essentially be free advertising for them, and highlight a competitive advantage when it comes to securing business from more progressive people.
