Sorry Hawkeye... I agree with you on a lot of things, but determining which American citizens can and cannot vote is un-American, goes against the ideals of liberty and freedom. If you are 18 and a legal US citizen you should be able to vote. I realize that we have a lot of low information voters (which is why Obama was elected twice) but what about the folks who stay home? I as an American citizen consider it my civic duty to vote, and may not vote for either mainstream party because they're both corrupt. But if that means that one day out of the year I have to stand in line at the poll to vote (a minor inconvenience) so be it! I still make my voice heard. Even if it is a protest vote, by not pandering to the 2 main parties.

Maybe in the 1700s it made sense, because staking out a piece of land to tend was something anyone could do, and it meant you were sinking roots in the community, and not just passing thru. But in the modern USA we have foreigners who buy up US property. When I lived in Hawaii, the word was that most of the land on the islands was owned by the US government or the Japanese. It's all but impossible for anyone but the ultra rich to own property in Hawaii.
