Former President Jimmy Carter announced he has been diagnosed with cancer in a brief statement issued Wednesday. "Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," Carter said in the statement released by the Carter Center. "I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare."

The statement makes clear that Carter's cancer is widely spread, but not where it originated, or even if that is known at this point. The liver is often a place where cancer spreads and less commonly is the primary source of it. It said further information will be provided when more facts are known, "possibly next week."

Cancer sucks. I am glad that Carter has led a long and what appears to be happy life.

One of the very few Democrats I consider a decent human being.

Sad.

90 is a good run. At that age it's not a tragedy. Still sad.

Default Tragic news

Very, very sorry to hear this.

Jimmy Carter is a great human being, a great man, and a great American. He was a great President. This country and the world will be a lesser place when he's gone.

The only President who didn't start or engage in a war.

Some people here see that as a negative.

I am so sorry to hear this.

I just told my husband a few weeks ago that I thought he was on his way to becoming the longest-lived president (he's lived post-presidency longer than any) because both Ford and Reagan had already been diagnosed with Alzheimer's by Carter's current age.

His dad, brother, and sister all died from pancreatic cancer. And his mom's breast cancer spread there. I read that he had been checked after a bout of abdominal pain a little over a year ago, and was happy that it turned out not to be what I'm sure he feared at the time.

You would think that at his advanced age, he should be able to rest easy, confident that maybe he had beat the odds. I hope that his prognosis isn't grim, and that he returns to good health.

I wish him and his family the best! I hope we find a cure for cancer within my lifetime. So much money and awareness but still no cure, makes me wonder if it's being kept secret because treatment is so profitable compared to a cure. Best wishes Carter!
