"While I am very proud of my boys for everything they do and will encourage them till the day I die, these trophies will be given back until they EARN a real trophy,” Harrison captioned a photo of his sons’ student-athlete trophies. “I’m not about to raise two boys to be men by making them believe that they are entitled to something just because they tried their best. Cause sometimes your best is not enough, and that should drive you to want to do better...not cry and whine until somebody gives you something to shut u up and keep you happy.” James Harrison
I've always said that the participation trophies are the source of all evils on the earth. ISIS, abortion, homosexuality, illegal immigration, unemployment, evolution, inflation and Justin Bieber all stem from participation trophies.
I bet them kids turn out successful and get a few real trophies.
I saw this story yesterday, but his gesture is 20 years too late for most people. Good for him and his kids, however! He is a good parent.
The "participation" generation who got trophies for showing up are already adults....sort of. They live with their parents (60%), earn minimum wage, and have $50,000 in college loans.... if you believe Hillary Clinton.
Both my daughters when they left for college threw theirs in the trash. they were meaningless to them.
I find that kids aren't as stupid as parents, I mean, as parents think. Kids inherently know the difference between an award for showing up and and an award for actually winning. I think that Mr. Harrison could have just as easily articulated this beliefs without the need to make a show of giving the trophies back... but then again, maybe Mr. Harrison isn't as smart as his kids.
