Personally I think it is negligence to decline and be fearful of taking responsibility for ones own security.

Well, for starters, because the Second Amendment has nothing to do with your right to own your gun. The Second Amendment is about the Congress regulating the militia. So if you support the Second Amendment, you support a strong militia. Which is not really what we are even talking about here. So you are kind of a little out on left field right there.

This is why the US and Israel doesn't want anyone else to have Nukes. They want to be the one calling the shots.
The last thing criminals want is to deal with armed marks, true but there are many people in our country that even though they can purchase and carry a firearm shouldn't. Just look around on your drive to work and you can see what seems like the majority of people aren't paying attention, are road raging, or are just plain oblivious to their surroundings...these are the people that should not have a gun. If you are irresponsible in your life, a firearm is the last thing you should have. All it will do is cause you are others to get hurt or killed.
In a perfect world, sure I agree with you OP. But then again in a perfect world we wouldn't need anything to protect us from criminals.

You might do some reading. The SCOTUS and most of the States disagree with you.

Yes …

Everyone should be taught and encouraged to:

(1) Pay attention to the situation around you (situational awareness).

(2) Lock doors and windows.

(3) Keep valuables, keys, documents, etc., in a safe place not easily visible.

(4) Avoid activities, areas, persons known or likely to be dangerous.

(5) Do not -- ever, ever, ever -- hesitate to dial 911.

(6) In a dicey situation in a public place, pull the nearest fire alarm.

(7) Learn and practice some very basic physical self defense skills and techniques.

(8) Seek safety in groups.

(9) Avoid intoxication, which renders one more vulnerable.

And if someone attacks you?

Yes …
The recent SCOTUS ruling on individual gun ownership got it wrong, IMHO … But that decision unfortunately now stands … for now … At the same time, however, the justices write clearly that gun controls and regulations are permitted under their interpretation ...
