The mention of God doesn't bother me so much, but the pledge I think you're definitely right on. It's fine to be devoted to your neighbors and friends, but pledging allegiance to a government is not the same. The U.S. does a lot of evil stuff, and seeing people stand by it out of loyalty is sad. People should be critical of every nation equally...even their own. Patriotism creates division between people of the world.

It was the God of Reason. You should have learned that in high school.

Growing up and reciting the pledge every morning at school has given me great reverence for our flag and as I progressed and came to learn what that flag means for so many it is still humbling.
Francis Bellamy was a socialist.

Here are children performing the Bellamy Salute while reciting the Pledge:

And even more, that students are compelled to say the pledge of allegiance (including the phrase "one nation, under God") every morning. This brainwashes feeble minds into subservience to their country, which I think is a form of propaganda to mold American children into chauvinistic adults who will be willing to join the army and fight blindly to defend the concept of "United States". I think sensible people should urge their children to exercise their First Amendment right to freedom of expression and religion to OPT OUT of saying the pledge. As a child I saw how ridiculous the practice was, but was afraid that I would be castigated if I had sat down throughout that morning ritual. Now, I see that I was pressured to being a sheep and accepting it despite how ridiculous it seemed. These tactics are powerful and we must recognize them and refuse to submit to social pressures to act in asinine ways! For example --
during World War I, the British government employed women in cities to belittle men who chose not to fight, basically calling them wussies. And the sad thing is that it was effective!
I wish these were the two biggest issues with the US Government.

Our country was built on the idea of questioning authority, not blindly adhering to established laws. Symbolism doesn't matter.
Our country was built on religious freedom and our faith and trust in God.
The Lord's Prayer was also recited before the pledge of allegiance and we didn't have the problems you younger ones have today.
Let me guess your teacher has put you up to this as a experiment in modern socialism our educators are pushing you into...my father and WW2 vets warned me about this years ago the rise of socialism for the sheeple...

Pledging allegiance does not mean you have to agree with "evil" things done by your government. You should work to change what you feel is wrong.
