Sometimes a POTUS is best known for a staged carrier landing, while another is remembered as the guy who had both the brains and the guts to get Osama bin Laden in his hideout in Pakistan …
They can agree on anything they want. That would be a disaster of epic proportions.
Now let's see, who really is the legitimate owners? Was it the Crow people or was someone there before them and even before them? Heck, the tribes that occupied the Black Hills prior to the Lakota probably had a different name for it than Paha Sapa. The city of Sioux Falls was derived from the word Sioux which has many connotations, one of which was said to be a derogatory word by the Chippewa's for the Lakota/Yankton/Nakota tribes meaning Little Snake. There's lots of other scholarly ideas where this word came from as well. BUT, just knowing this, maybe it's time to rename our city as well as Sioux City since it "might" be offensive.
And on and on we go.
Incidentally, Indian beliefs primarily of the plains people state that no one owns mother earth. The concept of land ownership was brought by all those immigrants from Europe.
(1) The Dakota people have consistently wanted, sought and demanded the return of Paha Sapa to THEM …
(2) The fact that the US Guv'Mint has offered them a paltry sum of money in exchange for legal title indicates that (3) the US (European Invader) Guv'Mint recognizes the legitimacy of their claim ...

That is a mind twister, if non Indian Americans are so ashamed of the American history of expansion and subjugation (relatively mild by World's standards) why dont just pack and get hell out in tears and remorse? Life is not a fairytale, stronger cultures replace weaker ones all the time. If Indians dont like it, they are free to try kicking Anglos out one more time.
One wonders if it was called Mount King after MLK, if he would be changing it?
I suspect not, nor would his liberal supporters be for that either. But hey, president McKinley was just another old dead white guy, so any of them are fair game compared to the liberal left hero's. One wonders if they will start renaming something else after their new hero, Bruce Jenner.
I'm not going to dig into this since I really don't have a dog in the hunt. My "guess" as to which Alaskans that requested the name revision would overwhelmingly be the ones of the same party as our illustrious leader and not the overall population of the state. Are those odds in my favor?
Your guess is wrong.
Alaska is a reddish state, and Denali is just the name people in general here use, not a dog whistle. Believe it or not, there are places left on Earth where not everything is soaked in two-party partisan politics. The most recent move was put forth by our Republican senator, but this is something Alaska has been pushing for for a long time.
About a quarter of Alaska's population is Native so that's a lot more of a political and cultural presence than other US states have. But "Denali" is the common parlance here among non-Natives as well.

Maybe, maybe, maybe President O'Bama before leaving office will correct another American imperial injustice and restore the Black Hills ("Paha Sapa") of South Dakota to the indigenous people from whom we stole them.
That would be nice, but doubtful.
I know this President couldn't do many positive things due to the climate of say no to everything congress has had recently, but these small things are nice fixes.

A lot of these tribes historically don't like each other as it is so this could open up a fun can of worms.
I'm no Obama fan, but I have no issue with this mountain being renamed.
Same here. Besides, from what I understand the people of Alaska are cool with it, and it's the folks in my state that are upset with it. This falls under the catagory of bigger fish to fry in this country than getting upset over a changing of a mountain's name.
LOL …
Maybe he can stage a carrier landing, with a banner, "Mission Accomplished" … ???
Why would he want to copy another President...... He must have his own ideas, or does he......
