But that has nothing to do with our discussion is it? A car is a vital part of our economy and infrastructure. If you can prove to me that a gun is equal in importance to a car in our world, then I'll gladly leave it alone.

The big mistake here is that many posters are not familiar with George Washington. He is first and foremost, a government law and order man who believes the citizens should be obedient and orderly. He would be horrified with what's going on today.
Washington was a rebel who recognized that tyrannical governments should be overthrown and you can't do that at the ballot box.
Here's a scenario I envisioned when my son was young and I was wavering on getting a gun. Let's say, I'm a responsible gun owner and ALWAYS KEEP MY GUN LOCKED IN A SAFE. Which, is what they all say - especially those with young children.
Then, I wake up in the middle of the night with some intruder standing over me with a knife in his hand.
Is my gun going to protect me in this situation? Maybe the intruder will give me a head-start whilst I unlock the gun safe?
