Those were pre- 9/11 times. And pre 27,000 Islamic terrorist attacks all over the world since 9/11.

Times have changed.

I'm not saying we shouldn't help, but there needs to be a bullet proof vetting process in place.

We can argue about who is guilty of what over the last fifty years (starting with Ted Kennedy's 1965 immigration bill) until we're blue in the face, but....

Why don't we just agree to kick out all the illegals...

keep more from coming here...

and say "no" to any further legal immigrants or refugees until we have full employment and nobody on welfare?

Baloney, both Republican and Democrat business owners hire illegal aliens. It's not just a Republican thing. There are more rich Democrats than Republicans anyway.

If the Democrats want higher wages and jobs for Americans then why are they pushing for another amnesty so that illegal aliens can remain here and retain American jobs? Obama gave millions of them a stay of deportation along with work permits? WTH? How does this help the American worker and increase wages for them?

The double layered wall (not fence) that was approved by congress but never funded can't be gone around. Plus there are tunnel sensors also. Obama did not deport a record number of illegals that has been debunked in here a hundred times. Even he admitted to a Spanish speaking audience that those numbers were fudged.

The title of this thread is false also. Reagan granted amnesty to illegal aliens not refugees. Refugees don't require an amnesty.

Did that article get into Reagans later view that it was a mistake?

Remember this deal was done by Reagan with an agreement with the democrats that if they did the amnesty, the dems would get on board with a real plan to stop the flow of illegals into the country.

They backed out of that portion of the deal, and only Amnesty happened.

So now what you have is a republican party that is simply saying "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me".

We aren't falling for it. stop the flood of illegals then we can decide what to do with those that are here.

Have you ever used it? As simple as when people were trying to sign up on healthcare......it is not simple to use and it is setup to benefit the illegal, not the employer.

well you start the thread with the false spin of 'reagans amnesty'

Reagan did NOT support amnesty. but was forced to sign it...amnesty bills have been done over 9 times...nine of those bills authored by very liberal ted kennedy

Reagans ideas on amnesty??? nope he was against it...amnesty has always been pushed by the freaking liberals

why do liberals constantly push amnesty for illegal actions of people being illegally here

to COMPLETE that picture...there have been 9 amnesty bills, 8 PASSED, since 1965....ALL authored by Ted Kennedy

In 1986 Senator Kennedy said, ‘This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.1 to 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forward another amnesty bill like this.’

Ronald Reagan was opposed to illegal immigration and amnesty. In fact, if you do a little research you will find that stopping illegal immigration was part of the Republican National Committee’s platform back then and Ronald Reagan ran on that platform.

The 1986 Immigration Reform Act that rewarded illegal aliens with amnesty was known as the Simpson-Massoli bill of 1986. When first drafted, the bill was suppose to make it a criminal offense for aliens who were not authorized to work in the United States a federal criminal act and that it would be a federal crime for employers to hire illegal aliens.

Here's what happened, the Democrats in Congress refused to sign on this bill unless the 1.5 million illegal aliens already thought to be in the country illegally and would qualify for amnesty were rewarded amnesty. (reason being, if these illegal’s were to become U.S. citizens, guess what party they would most likely vote for ? )

So the amnesty part was added on to the bill other wise the Democrats wouldn't sign on. And to muffle the out cry, the American people were told that this amnesty was a one time thing and would never be repeated again.

Well the bill passed both houses of Congress and President Reagan signed the bill. In the inner circles of the administration, Ronald Reagan was to have said he may have made a mistake by signing the bill.
Guess what ?, it wasn't 1.5 million illegal aliens who would have qualified for amnesty. It turns out that over 3 million were rewarded with amnesty, mostly because of the fraud that took place during the amnesty process. Phony rent receipts, phony pay check stubs, liberal judges expunging criminal records of illegal aliens!!!

And after the bill became law, you had Teddy Kennedy watering down the enforcement part of the bill that had to do with enforcing and prosecuting employers who hired illegal aliens.

--------------------------

Here is Ted Kennedy commenting on the 1965 immigration bill,Quote
“The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission.” End of Quote.

In 1994, Ted Kennedy’s Section 245(i) Amnesty gave legal residence and jobs to 578,000 illegal aliens. It was a temporary rolling amnesty primarily for extended family members of immigrants who instead of waiting in line, come on to the country illegally.

In 1997, Ted Kennedy’s extension of the Section 245(i) rolling amnesty was followed by an increasing flow of illegal immigration.

In 1997, Ted Kennedy also won an amnesty for close to one million illegal aliens from Central America. Illegal immigration sped up some more.

In 1998, Ted Kennedy won an amnesty for 125,000 illegal aliens from Haiti.

In 2000, Ted Kennedy got the so-called Late Amnesty, legalizing another 400,000 illegal aliens who claimed that they missed out on Kennedy’s 1986 amnesty.

In 2000, Ted Kennedy also won the LIFE Act Amnesty for an estimated 900,000 illegal aliens. It was another reinstatement of the rolling Section 245(i) amnesty...an estimated 900,000 illegal aliens. Illegal immigration accelerated.

What sort of president is forced to sign a law? I'm not actually liberal and thought Reagan was a great president but, by your logic, he was quite a weak leader if he was forced against his will to sign a law he didn't support.

Strong leaders lead and Reagan explicitly said, over several years of his own accord and before his mind began failing, that he believed people who've lived here for a while should be granted citizenship:

“I supported this bill. I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and who have lived here even though sometime back they may have entered illegally.” - Ronald Reagan, 1984

"...we very much need in any immigration bill — we need protection for people who are in this country and who have not become citizens, for example, that they are protected and legitimized and given permanent residency here. And we want to see some things of that kind added to the immigration bill.”- Ronald Reagan, 1985

“We have consistently supported a legalization program which is both generous to the alien and fair to the countless thousands of people throughout the world who seek legally to come to America. The legalization provisions in this act will go far to improve the lives of a class of individuals who now must hide in the shadows, without access to many of the benefits of a free and open society. Very soon many of these men and women will be able to step into the sunlight and, ultimately, if they choose, they may become Americans.” - Ronald Reagan, 1986

Yep. He signed it. He owns it. Part of the cannon of St. Ronald of Tampico. Didn't seem to hurt the economy too much, given the US GDP has more than doubled (real dollars) since then.

I guess many posters in this forum were too busy making "C-" grades in shop class when St. Ron was also under assault from "true conservatives" (Pat Robertson and Newt Gingrich among them) for his nuclear deals with the Soviets as well......

Long Before Obama and Iran, Conservatives Compared Reagan to Neville Chamberlain

Step away from the AM radio and read a book on occasion - lest you long for an ideal time that never actually existed (which is a hallmark of modern political conservativism, oddly enough).
