"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday afternoon is expected to set up his end-game to avoid a politically disastrous lapse in government funding. He will likely make his move immediately after an attempt to defund Planned Parenthood fails in the face of Democratic opposition, according to sources briefed on his plans."

Government shutdown: Mitch McConnell readies last-ditch strategy to avoid shutdown - POLITICO

What's amusing about his strategy is that it incorporates a way to box out Cruz from attempting a filibuster. But Cruz is hinting that he has a strategy to counter McConnell's move.

Pass the popcorn.

Pass the popcorn indeed. And I don't want Pelosi or Reid to help bailout the Republicans from their sclerosis either.

McConnel and Boehner are a pox on the republican party. They should probably run as democrats in the future
.
Who cares if the government shuts down? The elderly still have medicare and social security and we still have a military. I think we would be just fine if the federal government shut down for a very long period of time.

No law nor contract compels Congress to pay recipients.
In two important cases, Helvering v. Davis and Flemming v. Nestor, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Social Security taxes are simply taxes and convey no property or contractual rights to Social Security benefits. Benefits are at the sole discretion of Congress.

And if the Congress does not authorize paying for the military, that, too, loses funding.

so the last time cruz shut the gubbermint down, bay-nor and mcconnel freaked out and cried like the babies they are and the media and the president promptly blamed "republicans"

then republicans won an historic majority in the house and gained control of the senate.

so bay-nor and mcconnel should freak out and get all worried that the president and the media are going to blame them .

it will likely mean they will have to deal with more republicans.

snort.

"The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that unless Congress passes funding measures to keep government agencies open, funding for 46 million Americans that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP or more commonly, food stamps, will not be available."

Food stamp payments could stop with Oct. 1 government shutdown | AL.com

This time there could be very visible consequences. Which is why I think McConnell is desperate to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The Federal Government Employees look forward to yet another paid vacation, last time they even received unemployment benefits. It's a waste of money and accomplishes absolutely nothing.

Shutting down government to defund Planned Parenthood, neither makes any sense.

As long as the old folks and military contractors are taken care of eh? Interesting demographic you support.

They won't get any pay while the government is not open.

Just a reminder that government shutdowns have real consequences for the nation. The last government shutdown put a lot of folks out of business, some permanently. Republicans opposed to the looming shutdown are quoting 100,000 jobs lost last time.

Just one example, businesses that serve visitors to adjacent National Parks lost most of their customers. Some of those businesses folded. Most had to lay of their employees. The employees tended to be rural folk at the low end of the economic scale. None of the politicians that engineered that shutdown gave a tinkers' damn about those people.
