He vetoed it because of unrelated bills. Instead of compromising on them he is using this as leverage to get what he wants.

This is one of the reasons we have such gridlock in Washington, you can't even get something everyone agrees upon into law.
What? That can't possibly be true. I mean, it's just the evil GOP that refused to compromise and holds citizens hostage for ideological spending.

Maybe we should return to the name of War Department as it was until 1950's.

What does the defense bill have to do with funding for other agencies? Nothing of course unless you are going to use it for bargaining chip.

Again the funding level is exactly what Obama asked for. He got it and vetoed. His veto has nothing to do with defense spending.

Of course I do. The Defense Authorization Act includes funding for Homeland Security, FBI, Veterans Affairs, US State Department, some DOJ, GITMO, some Energy Department, some FEMA, Cyber Security ...... lot's of tiny little things we don't need.

This is true - it's also the same time period when those same Leftists were chanting about "Pig's in a Blanket" (body bags) They never "change" their Playbook.

President Obama on Thursday took the rare step of vetoing a major defense policy bill, upping the stakes in a faceoff with Republicans over government spending.

Obama used his veto pen on the National Defense Authorization Act during a photo-op in Oval Office with a BIG photo op that nobody even noticed. It's all Ho-Hum at this point, the public can't even be bothered with the Staged Kabuki Dance anymore.

“I’m going to be vetoing this authorization bill. I’m going to be sending it back to Congress, and my message to them is very simple:
Let’s do this right,” Obama said.

It’s highly unusual for a president to veto the defense legislation, which typically becomes law with bipartisan support. The move amounts to a public rebuke of congressional Republicans, who warned that vetoing the $612 billion measure would put the nation’s security at risk.

It's an unusual move - Obama asked for $612 Billion for the Defense Budget ..... AND he got that.
Secretary of Defense, Ashland Carter wanted more than $612 Billion ...... AND he got that, via a "War Fund".

And yet ...... Both if them recommended a VETO.
Both Obama and Carter objected because Congress didn't remove ALL spending CAPS for ALL spending - both Domestic & Defense.

It sure sounds like the President of the United States AND the Secretary of Defense are a LOT more concerned with funding for squishy stuff like Planned Parenthood, Green Energy, Welfare and Amnesty/Immigration stuff, Crony Corruption - than they are National Defense.

IF they don't want the current Defense National Authorization Act/Budget -- then let's just go with the Sequester Limits already in place. I don't think it will matter anyway. We don't even have basic protections of Air Craft Carriers in the Med anymore - they pulled out totally and Iran started "testing" Ballistic Missiles that are War-Head capable. The USA is more interested in letting Iran & Russia do whatever they choose and opening prison doors than they are anything even remotely associated with "National Defense".
Of course we all know that Obama knows best "what's right."

Im for cutting defense spending because I am also for cutting US Military involvement in other countries. I am for letting the rest of the world pony up both with money and using their own militaries to police the world.
There are many things we can cut. EPA funding, congressional benefits, streamline our federal police agencies and maybe merge a few of them. The DEA, ATF and FBI for example. Merge US Marshal service with the Secret Service. Our Fed is a bloated juggxrnaught gone wild. We fund unless and pointless studies. For example Why do Lesbians tend to be Obese and gay men fit and trim. Origami condoms etc. I mean seriously wtf?

Obama can (and does) "claim" whatever he pleases. He is perfectly aware that the Overseas Contingency Operations Fund was NEVER subject to the CAPs of Sequestration. Obama proposed the Sequestration Limits, John Boehner called his bluff and implemented them. Obama told us it would be Armageddon ..... it wasn't Armageddon.

Obama got exactly the amount of money he wanted for the Fiscal 2016 Defense Budget - he just didn't get it all in the specific places he asked for. That's why they put more in the Overseas Contingency Operations ...... after all ........ President "No Boots" has troops in Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan and a multitude of African Nations. He is flying Drone and Air Strikes all over the globe.

We gotta lotta "overseas (needing contingency) operations" -- Congress has authorized the funding for his Global "No Boots" policies and they did it without removing the Obama Sequestration Limits/Caps.

No wonder he is furious - his Domestic Squish is not going to get those Caps removed, AND he is still stuck with the Sequestration Program he forced down the throats of Congress to get his extended Debt Ceiling through the 2012 election.

Good Luck to President Stompy Foot AND the Democrats -- they will make history by both a VETO on a National Defense Authorization that MEETS the President's own Budget Request - AND by shutting down the Government because Armageddon didn't occur when Congress stuck to Obama's own Sequestration Policy - reminder to all that it was NEVER a "cut", but only a reduction in Increase.
Even the Media can't find a way to spin this. It wasn't a Republican Bill, it was a Bi-Partisan Bill.

Defense chief says Obama likely to veto defense policy bill |Reuters
Obama had sought a base Pentagon budget of $534 billion, well in excess of the $499 billion federal spending cap for 2016. He also sought $51 billion in war funds. He didn't think the OCO was a "gimmick" when he requested $51 Billion for th.at Fund - it only became a "gimmick" when both the House & Senate passed a Bipartisan Authorization Bill that MET his Defense Request without removing Obama's own Sequestration Limits. Funny Funny Stuff.

To avoid breaking the spending caps while still giving the president the level of funding he sought, Republicans on Capitol Hill reduced the base budget and added extra money to the war fund, which is not restricted by federal spending limits.

The Good News is ..... Congress can FIX this in a hurry to satisfy both President Stompy Foot & Secretary Carter (both in favor of the VETO) - They can go directly to the Limits in place for the Defense Department for Fiscal Year 2016 .... which is $499 Billion and the OCO amount President Stompy Foot requested for FY 2016 ..... which is $51 Billion and the Triumphant President & Carter will be happy.
