For the longest, the idea of the US meddling in the Middle East for oil has been regarded as an anti-war conspiracy theory. This is the narrative from right side of the spectrum. But in reality, is it really a conspiracy theory? I mean many historians and political scientists have been contending that US foreign policy in the MENA is indeed driven by oil interest.

So why did the US invade Iraq? It wasn't because of WMDs?

Isn't it just generally accepted that the reason the US is so interested in the Middle East is because of oil? (Well, that and Israel)

It's not like the US is going to notice if Burundi is invaded by it's neighbors...

Come on KIK...you're not a dummy poster. You know damn well that oil is at the root of EVERY SINGLE POLICY DECISION WE MAKE IN THE MIDDLE EAST!

Stop it.

Even the support of Israel has oil at its root to some degree.

And you're right about Burundi. Look at Rwanda. Americans slept quite well while hundreds of thousands were slaughtered and our leadership refused to call it genocide. No oil or valuable resource was at stake.

After I saw our reaction to that, I'm now against ANY American involvement in stopping genocides no matter where they are.

The nonreligious or sectarian actors are there for oil. Why else step in that hornet's nest?

I think the hornets nest aspect is overblown. Before the oil and WW2, it was a relatively peaceful part of the world. Western meddling has made a mess of the region. Still, not all of the M.E. is bad. I have friends that work over there and they love it.

The M.E. needs to be free to develop organically. It would be painful and bloody, but outsiders can't fix it. That much I know.

Correction for bolded words (IMO): WW1 and European meddling.
