Being a member of the NRA means getting a constant barrage of "Obama's gonna get your guns. Send us money quickly. We need it NOW in order to protect your gun rights."
That is not necessarily true, I called them years ago and told them I did not wish to get any of their garbage and also went to email only and have not received any since then.
They fight for gun rights and while I may not agree with everything they do, I do realize that without them in there fighting, the dems would have been able to take away some or all of our guns rights long ago.
If you all who wish to keep your gun rights, then think about joining and doing as I had done, that way you pay once a year or for multiple years and they keep up the battle for all of us. Battles take money, without yours, possibly one day soon and especially if a dem become our next president, then we can all kiss some or all of our guns goodbye.

Yes they call and try to get money to support the cause, but they spend a lot of money keeping our gun rights for us. In many states without the NRA GOA we would not have CCW or over 10 round mags. People who don't join ride the backs of those who do and do the heavy lifting while patting them self on the back saying how they vote bla bla bla. If you want to ride the coat tails of those who support gun rights fine but stop peeing in our ear and telling us its raining by your BS on how these groups have done nothing to keep the very rights you use from being degraded. People who do this are part of the problem not the solution.
This is the new lie the left is putting out. I have gotten spam emails from moveon that had some so called woman gun owner who wanted more gun control. They tried this back in the 90s and it failed miserably. The one thing it did show me is that they know little to nothing about gun owners. You can go to most any range in the country and ask and you have about a 99 percent chance that they would laugh this off as pure fantasy. I can find NRA members who don't like the NRA but very few like Micheal Moore who is a life member and did so just to get into to Charlton Heston for a fake interview.
You are new here but we prefer to keep this forum apolitical. There is a reason this forum is under "Hobbies and Recreation", we prefer to talk not about the politics of gun ownership, but the enjoyment of the hobby, safety issues, consumer concerns, etc. When you say "democrats say..." the thread changes from being about the topic but about politics. Then you get the P&C forum regulars wandering into this thread, and, trust me, you don't want those nuts here. Next thing you know, the mods lock down the thread and members get sent to "banned camp".
Yes indeed the Washington Post is a left leaning rag but "democrats" don't say "most gun owners...", the newspaper said it...based on biased sources perhaps.

I guess that must be the reason that MrsM and I just switched from 2 year memberships to Life Members.
I may disagree with with some of the NRA's political agendas, but still back the organization.
IMO to not support a group like the NRA or GOA is to **** away your gun rights. Its like someone saying I am not going to be part of a union I will go it by myself with the boss. Its just stupidity.
Sorry but supporting a group that only defends one of your rights but supports many other Right Wing objectives is not a reason to support that group.
I guess if one is totally a right wing supporter then it is money well spent but for many of us who are independent thinkers then our decision to not join makes perfectly good sense.
Trying to insult those who don't agree with you 100% is really what non thinkers do.
Just because I don't agree with you why would I call you stupid? That's what children do.
I'm a democrat, and an NRA member. AND voted for Obama twice.
I line up with pretty much the entire liberal platform EXCEPT gun control. I'm not going to vote Republican just for one issue. Because the Republicans are a bunch of ass clowns, especially this crop running for president. I hate Hillary, but jesus christ, what the hell is with this group of R's this cycle

I'm in your camp on this. I'm an independent. I stopped being a NRA member at least 15 years ago when it became abundantly clear that the NRA morphed more into a corporate lobbying group whose arguments, in my opinion, became pretty bent on extreme, with a healthy dose of fear mongering to fuel more sales for their corporate donors.
I support other groups, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and another Sportsman group and it really makes more sense for me (as an avid hunter). They support habitat and they fully support 2a, but not to the extremes that the NRA has bent towards.

A good guess is that the NRA is 13% corporate-funded.

People like to push this meme, too bad for them that it's provably false, and public record (IRS form 990)
Nearly half of the NRA's income comes from individuals in the form of memberships and program fees, and less than 10% from the firearms industry. For one analysis, see Do Assault Weapons Sales Pay NRA Salaries?
