name me 1 war on foreign soil that we won with just Air Power?
if that's the case why have an Army and Marines?......if Obama is not going to use them in this war then why have those branches in the Armed Forces that are all volunteer and who train 24/7 for situations like this?
As much as war has changed, some things stay the same. Air power has its purpose. Its purpose is to soften up a target area and make it easier for ground forces to penetrate. Wars are not now, nor have they ever been won strictly with air power. Air power makes a significant impact, but to end a war, ground forces must be inserted. This is no different than any other war we have ever fought from a strategic standpoint.
Penetrate what?
This is the very first time terrorists have built a nation. They are perfectly fine with disbanding it and going back to the same old strategy. And that's what exactly will happen if we send troops, they will all run back to their holes and kill a bunch of soldiers all over again like the colonists did to the British hundreds of years ago.
Good surveillance and targeted bombings and shootings are what is needed. Drones are durable and can fly fast and nimbly. They can chase a terrorist into the hole and kill them once they get in it. They can do that without killing the innocent schoolchildren a house down the street. It's all about taking out the right people.

This is a new century with a different kind of war than we've fought in the past. A branch of the military that does nothing but go the the dark places in cyberspace could do more to stop terrorism that the Marines.

How many troops do you think it would take? How long would they need to stay? How many countries would we have to occupy to keep the terrorists from slipping between borders? You do realize that a large number of the troops in Iraq where reserves right. I hardly think they were 24/7 types. I don't think there's a general consensus even at the pentagon. I've heard differing estimates between 10k and 200k. A few months, to indefinitely. Let's face it, it's a quagmire. No simple solution.

How long have we been doing this? It hasn't been successful to this point. There have also been numerous incidents of drone strikes killing civilians. (that incidentally happens in war) ISIS has expanded and is growing. At what point do you change strategy? Military leaders believe Obama is an idiot. You know what? They're right.
I don't think Obama wanted to give this talk. As usual he appeared to be above it all and only reiterating the same talking points only modified to match the circumstances.
Not since Jimmy Carter has a president been so out of touch with the mood of the country.
