Somalia has much more serious issues than being concerned with what holidays they celebrate, though this is indicative of the religious fundamentalist bend that often follows poverty, lack of education, and political instability. There was a 15 year civil war between 1991 and 2006. It experienced the worst drought in known history in 2011, precipitating further violence that continues on to this day. There are serious issues to access to education, largely stemming from those 15 years of anarchy and violence. During the civil war, most of the educated population left and has not returned.
There were some really big steps made to a more peaceful, democratic country in the past few years, but this type of chronic instability makes the country the perfect breeding ground for the type of extremism festering in the government.
