Bernie wants to tax more of the wealthy companies in the country.
If he becomes pres, will that even give him the power to do that?
If not, why is he running for president to do that?
Isn't he more suited to do that from congress?
Is there a subtle power the president has to change the laws?
Like vote this way or get investigated by the FBI sort of thing?
Why did Obama wait till he was president to bring in obamacare?
Why not when he was in congress when that was his job to make new laws?

If the Republicans were to define it they'd say he has all of the power and that everything that ever happens that they deem to be negative is because of Obama. In reality, the president has much less power than Congress.

Presidents of the United States as "commander and chief" of the military and head of the administrative branch of government has vast "soft" power. Congress OTOH controls the law making and budget process thus in theory can (and has historically) put the breaks upon any actions done by the POTUS say via executive order. That and or Congress can take the POTUS threw federal courts if they believe he has over-stepped his constitutionally mandated powers.
Much of what Obama has done in his terms of office is an expansion of what has become known as the "imperial presidency". That is governing around Congress by issuing executive orders and pretty much daring that body to challenge. IIRC this began with Regan and has continued via every president since including GWB I and II.
Obama ran on a platform saying he opposed such style of governing and so forth; but as Congress has often refused to play ball (that is see things his way) the man now claims he has no other choice.
Obamacare was pushed through Congress by the sheer power of Obama's efforts coupled with an early burst of enthusiasm from democrats/liberals and progressives in showing a full 180 degree turn around from the previous Bush/Republican conservative era. Then Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi had much to do with getting that job done along with a host of other long wished for democratic dreams that became law in the early Obama years.
Look at one of Obama's signature issues and legacy projects; getting shot of DATA and the Defense of Marriage Act.
Even when both were passed everyone with an ounce of legal ability knew at least DofM was on constitutionally shaky ground. Question was would the SCOTUS decide that it was time for gays to be considered "equal". Obama placed his bets, ran with it and won. By issuing directives to his administration including *not* defending the thing in courts the POTUS wielded vast "soft power" that got him what he wanted.
Thing is with any use of executive order a US POTUS risks either action from Congress to over turn, or succeeding administrations changing or scrapping the thing all together.

Statue or not, is irrelevant as evidenced by Obama's constant issuance of waivers to cronies re: Obama Care requirements despite no authorization for such in the statute, Executive Amnesty etc.
Power of the Purse - A joke. Obama has the Treasury including accounts, taxing agencies etc. He can tax and spend all he wants because he owns the Treasury. Appropriations by Congress - well Obama don't need no stinking entitlements - they are just a nicety - a formality. When you own the bank accounts AND the IRS, who needs Congress.
In other words, when Congress is run by limp, can-kicking, go-alongers, the Executive's power is nearly infinite.

You beat me to it. And this congress went belly-up when it came to Obama. So did the media. Everyone abdicated any responsibility when it came to Obama.

And much less power than this president thinks he has.
Ridiculous - most of these previous posts. The president has power to agree to or veto bills passed by Congress. There are strict guidelines as to what can be accomplished by Executive Act. Without Congress on his side, the President is very limited in what he can accomplish. The Obamacare bill was so greatly revised in order to get it through Congress that it is now quite unlike the vision the president originally had.
Therefore, please take all the present Presidential candidates' promises (both Democratic and Republican) with a huge grain of salt. They cannot get these things done by themselves - that just isn't the way our government is set up. Both houses of Congress have to agree in order to get bills passed.
