This is where a fluid situation gets even more complicated.

There's not one unified "militia".

The most well-known and generally recognized as law abiding militia, the Oathkeepers, have essentially stood down, except to protest. The Hammonds did not request their help and they are stepping aside. Oathkeepers are however present in town and lawfully protesting, some perhaps armed within local statutes.

III%ers are present, and I do not know their disposition.

It is the "Bundy-affiliated" ad hoc militia that has set up camp at Malheur. Three of Cliven Bundy's sons are allegedly there at the unauthorized / illegal "occupation" of the remote (and formerly unoccupied) federal building complex dozens of miles out of town. This remote site is supposedly their self-styled "patriot" stronghold -- far away from town, away from any courthouse or sheriffs office.

There are other 'militias' involved.

But currently there needs to made a great distinction between the lawful, protest and 'silent presence as witness' militia activity, as compared to the more radical, conflict willing, potentially violence-prone less organized ad hoc "Bundy-affiliated" militia now encamped on federal land miles away.

All militias are not the same by any means. And yes, before anyone points it out, under the language of our Founders, I and most other readers are 'the' militia.

Think of the word 'militia' the same as 'able bodied adult citizens of sound mind'. Theoretically, that is. More realistically, it's about those citizens banding together armed for a political cause.

In this case, I think that the most potentially violent and undisciplined have been cleverly diverted to a remote locale just as winter sets in. And I kind of doubt their soundness of mind.

Some militias are entirely law abiding, lawfully constituted, and adhere to highest military standards of ethics, chain of command, and rules of engagement. Others -- don't. Really, really, egregiously don't.

"Militia" is a hot button, adrenaline trigger word for the press. We do well to discern one militia from another.

I fully agree...that issue in Nevada, thou ending relatively peacefully was a huge waste of the taxpayers money. Bundy and his followers need to realize that Federal Land is not "private" grazing land...this is just another opportunity to gain cheap press...In order to understand either the facts of this case, or details
therein, one has to be able to read and comprehend...that's expecting more than Bundy can handle !

This does not sound like it is helping anyone's cause. Actually the Bundy militia does sound like the BLM movement that is just pissing off people.

"The Oregon sheriff whose county is at the heart of an anti-government call-to-arms said Sunday the group occupying a national wildlife refuge came to town under false pretenses. Sheriff David Ward said protesters came to Harney County, in southeastern Oregon, "claiming to be part of militia groups supporting local ranchers." In reality, he said, "these men had alternative motives to attempt to overthrow the county and federal government in hopes to spark a movement across the United States.”

Calling all idle bitter losers who blame your pathetic lives on the government! Since you have no jobs anyway please report to the federal building to take a stand. We promise companionship, some time in the spotlight, and a temporary suspension of that never-ending feeling of impotency in your life.

For purposes of education and discussion only, here is a link to the position of, and comments endorsing, the "Bundy-affiliated" faction:

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?sto...19%2Fpg12&_rdr

Compare it to the measured, legalist, and lawful position of the Oathkeepers:

https://www.oathkeepers.org/the-hammond-family-does/

The Bundy's crowd off in their "occupied federal building" might better be called an 'armed faction' to distinguish it from organized militia.

Major difference:

Agitated, armed, malcontents with itchy trigger fingers out yonder "occupying" a "seized" federal building.

Law abiding, organized militiamen and -women -- carrying arms only as permitted by all applicable statutes -- protesting in town, and seeking legal recourse for aggrieved ranchers and their families.

This Comic Sums up the Double Standard Used to Excuse White Violence

Quote:
On Saturday night, a group of armed militia members seized control of the remote headquarters building for the federally owned Malheur National Wildlife Refuge outside of Burns, Oregon. Their ranks include Ammon Bundy, son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who successfully held off Bureau of Land Management agents attempting to collect his cattle over unpaid taxes last year in a similar standoff.

They've earned only a tepid response from authorities so far, and the Bundys' previous armed rallies earned widespread support, leading some to conclude the mostly-white militants are benefiting a racial and political double standard. Just last week, a Cleveland police officer who shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice, a young black boy holding a toy gun, was let off without an indictment despite opening fire within seconds of arriving at Rice's location.

Here are two controversial names of internet media high profile agitators to watch for as the Bundy armed faction, uh, fails to thrive:

Santilli

Ritzheimer

Both have made a career for themselves by calling themselves "journalists" and "patriots" while vocally leading others right up to the brink of armed insurrection.

They are part and parcel of the Bundy faction.

As this plays out, it appears that they are likely pied pipers to the honeypot out in the middle of nowhere, in the a snowstorm, and poorly provisioned, which has conveniently isolated the most violence prone of potential insurrectionists into a self cleaning oven far from noncombatants.

In case I overlooked it... As winter sets in.

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge has been renamed but some unknown pundit as the Redneck Caliphate.

Easier to remember. And to pronounce.
