Because many people forgot what Freedom is, and how it is protected. Or they are not Americans and have never been exposed to civil rights, or even human rights and have no concept of the right to self protection or the right to bear arms.

And because a large portion of the US population is, or is related to criminals who prey on the rest of us - and they do not want us shooting their scumbag family members.

If you proposed a solution that would actually address the problem I would listen. You know what it is. I know what it is but you can't say it. Instead, we are talking about the "gun show loophole". Which of the gun crimes in the past 10 years would have been prevented by closing it?

Most of these cases were not about violence, they are about people who cannot manage their firearms.
If you cannot control your guns, you have no business owning them.
The first one alone should be enough to justify trying to do SOMETHING.
3500 children die a year in drownings.. I don't see a word about making people act responsibly for a pool. A pool isn't even a constitutional right. We should ban them.. "It's about the children". You don't even want to go into suffocation, falls, fires, and then there is the biggie.. Vehicle accidents. 44,000 children a year are killed in car wrecks. A car is NOT a constitutional right either. It's a tragedy when any child dies for any reason, but your outrage over deaths by firearms is ridiculous. More children are killed each year by child abuse than have been shot over the last 5 years. You have an agenda, and that is fine, but at least be intellectually honest about it..

"Because this is a major issue" and earlier it was "we have to do something"

How about traffic fatalities. Over 5,000 people died last year in vehicle fatalities in JUST California. They are not doing anything. Facts prove people didn't die as much when speed limit was reduced to 55mph for energy consumption. We could save thousands if the speed limit was lowered statewide.

California - you go first. Lower your state speed limit to 55mph which will save at least 1,000 lives annually while also help the environment by burning less fuel.
How can anyone ( liberals) reject this idea?

Oh you mean like this?
Man fights for life after double shooting in Handsworth street - Birmingham Mail

Barely 3 days into the new year and one of those rest of the world countries without gun violence has gun violence. Whodathunkit?

Australia had this early December
Bikie shooting at Picton: second body found after service station killing | Australia news | The Guardian

Two places often held up as examples. Now sure the US has gun violence, but the two examples show that it isn't limited to the US, and sure they're one event, but correcting for population you'd expect more events in the US than UK or Australia.

Newsflash everywhere has gun violence, and the places with lower homicides in Europe also have higher guns per capita. Germany has a very low homicide rate and is in the top 15 gun owning countries in the world, same with Austria, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland. America's problem isn't guns, it's people, it's deprivation, it's drugs, it's gangs. Get rid of one of these and it won't improve the situation, get rid of all but guns and people and the US would have homicide rates near parity with the rest of Europe, in fact certain states do have lower homicide rates than much of Europe, and far easier access to guns, if guns really are the issue, how can this be the case?

Indeed

Take away the mayhem from the gangbangers and criminals, and we have relatively low gun violence. That is especially true of a country with an estimated 300 million guns.

As others have pointed out, many more kids/people are killed in pools, car accidents, etc.
