Here we are at the end of January, only 10 months until the election, and what do we have?

Hillary --- eleven candidates for the GOP and no clear winner --- Trump

It will be said that the people decided, how can we decide when our heads are spinning? WE ARE SO SCREWED!!!!! History is being written, and we are a part of it, just as with every other empire that has fallen before us, it's our turn.

You should calm down. The worst Presidents we've ever had haven't been able to destroy the US yet, and it's not going to happen with the next one either. My years of watching and reading has shown that policies one doesn't like may be enacted, but it's not enough to destroy the nation.

We had plenty of prophecies that Obama, Bush, etc. would be our downfall and it just hasn't happened. The sheer momentum of our incredible mass as a geopolitical entity means any downward trajectory of the US is going to be slow in coming.

Maybe so. It appears that this is the election that will go down in history as the "Dog Whistle Election". Nothing of substance is being discussed. All those politicians who have comprehensive strategies to move the country forward have been marginalized and shut out of the conversation.
On the right the dominant themes are Mexicans are drug dealers, criminals and all need to be deported immediately. We'll build a wall where the Rio Grande river now sits. Mexicans will pay for it. We'll ban all people of Muslim faith from entry and require all American citizens of Muslim faith to carry special identification. Black people are responsible for all the white people murdered in America. BLM are terrorists, while Hammond/Bundy followers are God Fearing Patriots.
On the left, we have a total remake of universal health care for all. Massive tax increases for all. Free education for all, free this and free that.

All of it, from both sides, completely unworkable but makes a noise that appeals to a segment of the voters and only they can hear and believe.

The dog whistle election..........you're right. It could be the beginning of the end for this great nation.

I agree, it won't be a catastrophic failure, but I truly believe it has already begun.

Hmmmm Can we finally stop blaming Bush on all our problems and point to Obama the great divider or is it too soon yet?

It is crazy how we as Americans now know more about reality shows than current national and world affairs. We really have our heads in the sand while one side of the aisle tells us it will all be OK the other side is shouting "We are Doomed"

Obama, Hillary, Trump, Bush, Sanders and all the rest of the "also rans" is this the best we have?

Maybe just a wee bit melodramatic. I wonder if Trump getting elected would galvanize congress to actually start doing the work they are supposed to be doing because they would perceive him to be 'need all the help he could get'. Maybe I think too highly of them though
What we don't need is more divisiveness and that is what you'll get with Hillary (and probably Christie but he doesn't look like a viable candidate at this time). I'm beginning to wonder if Kasich has a chance. That might not be such a bad way to go.

It's unfortunate but I believe "the best we have" are all too smart to want the job.

They won't help him. When you insult people they tend to get defensive.

What can we expect from Trump? Trump has not stopped his immature behavior. He is still calling people idiots and bimbos on Twitter. That's not gonna stop. That's like marrying an alcoholic who is drunk 24/7 and expecting him to change just because he said he will.

The best predictor of future behavior is … past behavior

Yeah, I just don't see Trump making a good president. Unfortunately I think there is a chance he may get there. And I agree with the above poster who said the possible best candidates are not even running because of the BS involved. I cannot imagine how families endure the grind

Yes it is a pretty abysmal election cycle and while it is bad it may not be as bad as others. For the first 100 years nominees were selected by the party leaders so there wasn't much discussion about politics. Take the election of 1800 when the discussion devolved into a debate over whether or not John Adams was a secret monarchist and whether or not Jefferson was an atheist, who bedded his slaves and was the child of a "half-breed" Indian. And was before Twitter!

1828 wasn't much better when Andrew Jackson was accused of being a murder, the son of a prostitute and his wife an adulteress.

Muller: The presidential contest in 1884 was even worse. The Republicans skewered Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland, calling him a "lecherous beast" and a "moral leper" because he had once fathered a bastard child. That resulted in the infamous GOP chant "Ma, ma, where's my pa?" to which Cleveland supporters responded, "Gone to the White House, ha ha ha!" And we found a few other nasty nuggets from campaigns past.

And it didn't get better ever after.
