HB 3044 seeks to prevent depressed and suicidal LGBT youth from seeing a gay-affirmative therapist. The bill states that no public school “counselor, therapist, social worker, administrator, teacher or other individual” can “refer a student under the age of eighteen” to any “individual, organization or entity” if the referral “pertain[s] to human sexuality.”
A Slate reporter aptly summed up the effect of the bill:
"HB 3044 is an attempt to keep public school students in the closet, trapped with their depression and confusion, unable to seek help from an adult lest they be outed to their parents."
The bill is sponsored by Rep. Sally Kern, who is well known for making the statement that homosexuality is a bigger threat to the country than terrorism.
I don't doubt that it's bad legislation but the article appears more than a wee bit biased.
It says a 14 year old can see a therapist without the consent of their parents. The article notes that a LGBT kid wouldn't be able to go to a therapist if he was in an abusive home.
I'm doubting that.
Teen A: Hello, I'm 15 and having troubles at home and wish to talk to someone.
Therapist office: Are you gay?
Teen A: No.
Therapists Office: O.K. we can see you Thursday.
Teen B: Hello, I'm 15 and having trouble at home and would like to talk to someone.
Therapists office: Are you gay?
Teen B: Yes.
Therapists Office: sorry, we can't see you.
There is likely a problem with the bill I just wish those who want to bring attention to it would stick to facts.

The laws of Nature, have a unique way of culling the weak & the freaks. Trying to altering Nature has great consequences, with little to no effect.
If it was a gene, that gene would have been culled long ago from the breeding class.
If being gay was a choice, there would be no gay people.

No. It should tell you that something is wrong with our society. It's completely absurd that there are still parts of this country that are so backwards and bigoted that gay people seriously consider the possibility that death would be preferable to having to live in that sort of society.
It should tell you something that states like Missouri, Nebraska, Indiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi account for a wildly disproportionate amount of calls to the Trevor Project. Hmm, what is it about those places that might make gay people more likely to consider suicide? Perhaps the bigoted, hateful cultures that permeate them?

Oh look, someone doesn't understand anything at all about genetics.
If being gay was a choice, there would be no gay people.
If stealing were a choice, there would be no thieves. Oh, wait!
