Malcolm X was assassinated in 65, and pre-70s it was the white southern Democrats like Byrd and Wallace who were against arming blacks, not conservatives.
Disarming African Americans in the 60's was a fools errand because by that time everybody and their mother, black, white or whatever in the South owned a gun, guns. I grew up in Louisiana and there was never a shortage of firearms in my family.
As for the origins of African Americans with guns defending themselves against the Klan... there was no need for the NRA since black folks had on a number of occasions individually and in combination had confronted Klan violence with their own from the post Civil War years to the 1960's. Like the story of Jews too much attention has been focused on tacit acceptance of oppression while ignoring overt acts or armed resistance.
In the 60's one group that I have direct knowledge of where the Deacons for Defense and the NRA had absolutely nothing to do with their formation.
Do the black conservatives explain that the NRA opposed gun ownership when the Panthers started exercising their constitutional rights? It tore Reagan's shorts, too.
It tore more than this shorts. Don Mulford, a GOP assemblyman from Oakland, immediately submitted a bill that would strip Californians the right to openly carry, the NRA endorsed the bill and Reagan couldn't sign it fast enough.

At the time Reagan signed that legislation, he was a democrat. The Panthers were "patrolling" Oakland and "copwatching." As a result, I am sure that the voters in that community urged their legislators to do something, and that is what was done
Reagan was far from perfect when it comes to his record of conservatism, but in comparison to every other President, with the exception of Calvin Coolidge, Reagan beats out any other 20th Century GOP president hands down!
At the time Reagan signed that legislation, he was a democrat.
Oh for gawd's sake, is there no level of historical revision that you folks won't stoop to?
Reagan switched to the Republican Party in 1962 and ran as the Republican candidate for governor in 1966!
California Republicans were impressed with Reagan's political views and charisma after his "A Time for Choosing" speech,[1] and nominated him as the Republican party candidate for Governor in 1966.[2][3]

Like you were sure that Reagan was a Democrat when he was governor?
