Mechanical automation was never going to replace us, however it DID give us a lot more free time. 40 hr work weeks are possible because of it. The future automation is going to devastate the foundations of our ideas about work. I'm certain that not all of the changes that will occur will be positive.

Thats not really the primary topic here however. So lets get this out of the way, I'm probably considered a far left liberal by folks here. I DO NOT support illegal immigration, I do not even support much of the LEGAL immigration. People committing crimes belong in jail, and deported. By definition that is all illegal aliens.

The thinking I have seen from my friends on the left who I argue with about this in vicious facebook conversations (We're all friends in real life, but we also enjoy debate) is that we are a nation of immigrants. Thats the foundation of our country, taking the poor unwashed etc etc etc.

The other arguments are things such as the economic benefits of letting them in has clear beneficial results. And to be fair this is a decent argument that takes some serious effort to respond too.

And even a few that are just plain ol bleeding hearts.

That seems to be the thinking on the left that I have observed.
Looks like many of your friends are just useful supporters of the lefty oligarchs. Immigration is about capitalism. We have chosen both. The left has also managed to craft a progressive tale of why we need whatever comes to our shores. They have made it into a political correctness. Even the conservatives have to somehow give lip service to it. Romney said we are a nation of immigrants.

Socialism requires a somewhat closed system to make it work. Sanders ideas would lead to that kind of system. And that's not what the liberal block want.

Some liberals know this. But they lead a great life and they benefit from cheaper labor and diverse restaurants. They just don't care. Some even like to see the Blue collar white rednecks suffer finally. You are racist right, the country is becoming less white. You like conservatives right, accept lower wages then. This is a mentality held by many rich liberals.

Then there are ideological liberals who support immigration out of some principle, like anti racism or multiculturalism or nation of immigrants. They are single issue thinkers. They often disregard the economic argument. This is useful foolishness.

And then there are liberals like sanders who want the system to change but are having a hard time persuading people.

Really there is only one solution to this problem and that's robotic syrians. USA needs to make their own robot syrian army to work low wage jobs that poor folks think is "beneath" them, that way they can relax enjoy the benefits of welfare from while at the same time hating socialistic socialisms.

I tend to agree with some of these notions. I remember in the '60s being told that automation would simply "free up leisure time" for workers and it would be great!

Now if one believes that advances in robotics and automation reduce the need for workers (these tend to be higher paying jobs), why in the world do we need massive illegal immigration from Mexico and all these Syrian refugees?

Are the illegals and the Syrian, Somali, and Libyan immigrants immune from the pressures of robotics and innovation? Like most liberal agendas, it appears not to be well thought out................. unless the objective is to have a very large cohort of dependent citizens, which means more democrats.
I'm quite pleased with how population growth seems to be dropping, but it seems necessary for people to have relatively high standards of living for that to happen naturally. My ultimate goal would therefore be to convert first world nations into kinds of factories that take in immigrants in place of children to continue their society and convert them to secular humanist values through the temptation of internet and videogames.

It seems like there is at least a chance that legal immigration will help keep these first world nations with low birthrates from collapsing into inverted pyramid societies with a low working class supporting masses of the retired, so combined with that other western nations are taking in Syrian refugees too, and Germany and Turkey are pretty much overflowing, I don't see Syrian refugees as too bad of a thing. Regarding Mexican immigration, it seems like they'll swarm in anyway so we might as well legalize it. Note that I'd like the drug war to end at some point so the Latin American drug cartels can lose wealth and power and maybe stabilize Latin America a little more and then we won't have so many broke Mexican immigrants who don't speak English.

People losing low-skilled jobs due to robotics is a problem I can't think of an obvious solution for. Ideally we'll find some way of dealing with it in the future. Maybe it will require a more socialistic society with stronger central government...and republicans will kill themselves. Maybe we can just find some way to rapidly educate the populace, or give incentives to small businesses or something.

I may not even necessarily be a liberal though.
