Bill Text - 105th Congress (1997-1998) - THOMAS (Library of Congress)

The 1998 Iraq Liberation Act signed into law by Clinton gave POTUS the authority to direct Department of Defense assets (which include troops, etc.) to liberate Iraq.
Now the bits you always leave out:
Quote:
The aggregate value (as defined in section 644(m) of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961) of assistance provided under this paragraph may not exceed $97,000,000.
And section 8:

Quote:
SEC. 8. RULE OF CONSTRUCTION.

Nothing in this Act shall be construed to authorize or otherwise speak to the use of United States Armed Forces (except as provided in section 4(a)(2)) in carrying out this Act.
The 1998 act is about supporting Iraqi opposition groups, and anyone reading it as a carte blanche for a full-scale ground invasion, as far as I'm concerned, utterly dishonest.

The 2002 Act Bush signed into law approved the use of the US military to defend the national security of the US and to enforce United Nations Security Council resolutions, only.

The authorization to use the US military to liberate Iraq, however, was signed into law by Clinton in 1998.

Words matter.

Um... yeah, that's what I'm saying. Section 4(a)(2):

(2) MILITARY ASSISTANCE- (A) The President is authorized to direct the drawdown of defense articles from the stocks of the Department of Defense, defense services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training for such organizations.

That's not what this is about.

This is about creating hysteria in an effort to get bigger budgets.

And what are they doing with the budget they have? There is not one battlefield success the CIA has had in Syria. Now we hear this insanity whereby Shiites from Iraq carrying their shiny new American weapons have joined Russians and Iranians in Syria and are fighting the CIA backed and equipped rebels. How crazy is that?

And as you can see from the many posts here that people don't get it.

There were no WMD's until after the Pentagon asked for a 50% increase in their budget.
Now we need the scare tactics to justify the increase.

WMD's and the threat of them being used here on us.

the US are the ones that are crazy. Why are we supporting "rebels" who are really terrorists to unseat a sovereign government ?

Look what we did to Iraq and Libya when we invaded and killed their leaders.
Now we want the same for Syria.
