The average confirmation process appears to be about 3 months - nomination by the President and confirmation hearings about 2 months later and lasting 2-4 weeks.

A conservative, corrupt, hyper-partisan, activist Supreme Court Justice has croaked. Americans who love their country are happy to hear this. Hopefully he will be replaced by someone who is not beholden to billionaires and corporations in their interpretation of the law.

Fuhgeddaboudit. Nothing will happen until next year.
For comparison purposes, Kagan received 5 Republican votes, Sotomayor received 9

I don't think they have the option to refuse to do their duty.

On top of that, unless I had money to waste I wouldn't like the odds of McConnell not caving and giving it to him.
If McConnell ever tried that, which he won't, he would be stripped of his position
as Majority leader. People. It's not going to happen.

But don't worry, gun owners will be coming out in droves this year for what's at stake in November. It won't be good for Hillary.

I don't think so. The only thing separating Obama from the establishment Republicans is abortion. Beyond that, they have pretty much the same platform.

That was my thought. She always looks like she is on her way out. I was surprised to find out Scalia was 79.

As far as a replacement on the bench, it is such a shame that all of them make decisions based on their political ideology......hence so many 5-4 decisions on key issues. That should NOT happen, either way. It would be nice if there was a way to have ONLY non partisan's on the bench and/or to have a better system of appointing them, so that we could avoid the situation we have had of politics being the most important factor involved.

He died in bed but until there is an autopsy we don't know if it was peacefully in his sleep or an agonizing heart attack.
