Wow, i think that may just be a good idea, but if that happened, what effect do you guys think that it would have on Mexico and the border towns as far as crime is concerned?

Well the whole thing is that right now the way things are the only people who profit from marijuana being illegal are the drug cartels. The government has spent millions on an unwinnable "drug" war. Lets spend that money on treatment for those on hard drugs. I mean all that killing in Mexico is happening because its the people here in the U.S. that are buy those drugs.

With legalizing marijuana you would at least take that income away from the cartels. Just the way the market is tumbling for the US economy the market for the cartels would take a hit and hopefully reduce the violence.
Legalize it and tax it. You could also require people to purchase a permit to have it. Charge like $200 - $500 for the permit a year that can be sold at the local (Sylvia Romo)tax office. Let the city make money as well.

I agree with you 100%. I think that it should be legalized with the same restrictions as alcohol. When they legalized alcohol, I think that cut down some of the violence here in the states associated with illegal booze as well.

As the Bailouts mount - I am beginning to fear the long term effects more than the current slow down. How is our country going to pay for all the debt being accumulated? With the retiring baby boomers and our soaring national debt - this economy will be hurting for a long time I fear. Eventually we will feel it here in SA.

I believe soon we will reach the point of no return. Until then, they'll keep throwing hundreds of billions and a few more trillions of dollars at the problem rather than accept the real problem and address it.

When we reach the point of no return, it's too late to do anything and the chips will fall where they will.

Not to mention the sedative factor. America could use more stress reduction right now.

I just read a post where someone said you have a low unemployment rate in S.A. Our unemployment rate up here is 2.3% so we're doing fine, too.
I don't think everyone is just fine. Here's from the local news yesterday where I live:

We gave our kids their "allowance" (when earned) in a checkbook ledger where they could make deposits and withdrawls. This way they had to learn to keep track (with our initials to each entry/withdrawal) and think about their purchases.

Helps to reenforce some responsibility and decision making skills!
Awesome. Parents should be teaching their children these things-you know, how to be an adult and take care of themselves.

As an example, I work with a guy who is in his mid-20's who told me about how he has never paid for his own gas, his groceries, or done a load of laundry before. He drives home 2.5 hours every week with his dirty clothes so his mom will wash them for him. He continued to leave his dirty dishes in the sink at work and when I finally confronted him, he was genuinly perplexed why he should clean up after himself ("What's the problem? No one else minds washing my dishes for me."). WTF?

Then he makes the comment "Oh, your husband might be getting laid off? So? Ask your parents for money."

Not all of us have that option..

Sorry-went off on a rant. My point is, people need to start taking responsibility for themslves, especially now that things are not as rosy as they once were. I think we're headed for some even tougher times.
